View Full Version : "the Boot" and clothes ??

I am just past 3 weeks post op and attempting to go back to work again today. Problem - the first go around I wore summer sleeveless dresses most of the time for ease with the boot. Living in NC I can still get away with that for a bit. But eventually (esp during surgery #2) when the weather turns cooler or wetter I want the luxury/option of wearing pants (shorts my other option is not one at work). What have most of you women done? Don't think my dress pants will stretch over the o/s of the knee length air boot. Do you take it off, put on the pants, and then stuff the pant leg into the boot - closing it less to allow for the extra but still having support?

Any suggestions welcome - Also, I guess when it rains garbage bags are the standard coverup as the zerosox will not fit over the boot (just the leg)?

Thanks.

I found that I could wear capris with my boot. If you have some loose-legged pants, they might fit. You could try looking for some of those dress pants with baggier legs. Also, around the house I just wore some straight-leg pajama pants. Remember that you can take off the boot to put the pants on, so the leg only needs to be wide enough to accomodate the extra width around the leg, not go over the whole ankle. Of course, you could always get yourself a pair of zip-off pants and just zip off one leg... I'm kidding, I think. If you end up putting the boot on over your pant leg, I would avoid fabrics with thick seams (like jeans) so they don't dig into and irritate your skin.

Thanks Kehorner!

Actually today is the first day wearing pants. When at home I am still in shorts and a tee shirt! Anyway I wore a thin pants suit and placed the extra material inside the boot as I thought and also as you suggested - not too bad - a little balloony but
doable. At this point with the boot and tennis shoes, fashion has been thrown to the wind - and actually I am glad in some respects to have the excuse of the boot so that the tennis shoe is more accepted. Will be interesting at the looks I get when I am in 2 tennis shoes in a dress or suit - - - but hey, we only have 1 pair of feet!! :)

I find it's easiest to wear skirts- most of my pants I wore with heels and I trip over the edges because they're too long with flat shoes and the boot. Gap makes some wide-legged pants and those do fit over the boot quite nicely. I had a pair and had the hem taken up so they work with the boot and flats.

I was in a boot for 8 weeks and wore capri's to work a lot. When I did wear long pants I used a safety pin to attach a piece of elastic to the hem of my pants so my pant leg was like a "stirrup pant" where the elastic goes under your foot. This kept the pant leg from rising up out of the boot throughout the day and made it more comfortable.

I also noticed that if I wore black pants people were less likely to notice the boot :-)
