I was wondering what people's opinions are on eating soy? Recently, I've heard how eating soy can be bad for a person's thyroid? I've tried some soy based products such as MorningStar Farms and Boca non-meat Chik'n patties. I liked both brands. Though, I noticed that the MorningStar Farms brand uses artifical flavorings, but I don't think the Boca brand does.

there is a lot of controversy about the benefits or drawbacks of soy. TCM practioners usually do not recommend it. It is very hard to digest, particularly the whey by-product (soy milk). soy is a relatively "new" food when compared to other things like rice or wheat that have been around for hundreds and hundreds of years.
whether or not the eat soy can only be determined by a careful examination of one's digestive habits. soy is not recommended for me. i have not met anyone who has gone through this dietary analysis (TCM again) where it has been recommended. one must also remember that soy products have also been a "trend" in the marketplace and that its benefits have been greatly exaggerated.

You will find a full range of opinions all over the internet. If you decide there is some benefit to eating soy, bear in mind that even the anti-soy people concede that fermentation counters most of the negative effects. In which case, fermented forms of soy, such as tempeh and miso, are okay.

Soy really messes with my hormones. I don't think most people should eat a lot of it. I know some women's hormones benefit from it, but even then I think large quantities are dangerous.

Men can develop breasts by eating soy?
I thought soy would be healthier to eat than things such as chicken and beef? And it's supposed to have a good amount of protein in it.

Soy does mess with estrogen--- I suggest you do a search and decide for yourself--
I don't eat it and have concluded--- it is not as healthy for you as the manufacturers say!!!

I started drinking soy shakes as an alternative protein source ( I am vegetarian) to my surprise I found that the soy regulated my out-of-control periods and virtually banished my PMS. I felt sooo much better. I asked my GYN if the soy was safe and he said yes it was good for me. I feel so much better on it that I am not ready to give it up. I did stop taking it twice and it was back to PMS and heavy periods!

Soy is a primary staple in Japan where strokes, heart attacks, obesity, cancer deaths aren't anywhere near as high as in the Western world....and (believe it or not!) their women do NOT have horrid menopausal symptoms as do women of the Western world.
:nono: Men do not grow breasts. Whomever said so needs to do their research. Soy has many benefits for men, too, including prostate health.
 No wonder I don't frequent these boards anymore. There are no INFORMED answers here.

Rose,
Where do you get this information?
I take a soy based hormone supliment and it works great for me. But I have a huge family history of breast cancer so I'm very interested in where this info came from and following up on it.

I might add that soy bean products cause me to have enlarged breasts. I even have had to have 2 mammograms! Not only that both breasts have not returned to normal after stopping drinking soy in 1999.

DomNakita - There is a ton of info on the internet. Do a search on Health risks of Soy, health problems with soy, or something like that.....you will find a lot of stuff.
If you are pre-disposed to breast cancer, I urge you to stay away from the stuff!

What I DO know is that soy, canola and corn are three of the most genetically modified foods, which means basically that the seeds of such were created in a laboratory where the scientists split cells and cross bred all sorts of plant DNA to create something like a Frankenstein seed that was supposed to be resistant to certain diseases and produce higher yields. What happened was the corn, canola (whatever that really is) and soy caused the weeds growing around it to become resistant to pesticides. So the farmers had to spray more DEADLY pesticides to kill the weeds which were absorbed by the corn and soy and are sitting on your dinner table right now. If you want to eat soy, your best bet is to eat organic soy products. Check all food labels in the food you eat because if it contains any bi-products of these foods like syrup, starch, oil, it most likely came from these genetically modified crops. It's a scary world out there that seems to be getting scarier and diseases are becoming resistant to antibiotics. And I'm rambling again....... organic is better in my opinion.

From what I've read, the real problems with soy is when people take the isolates of it, as in supplements. Best to eat soynuts, beans, etc. or foods with those ingredients....it would be hard to OD on soy that way, like it would be hard to OD on potassium just eating a few bannanas.
It's the ODing, or overdosing/consumption that can cause problems. Otherwise, soy is pretty healthy in its natural form..

Wow... so much of that is just completely not true.
For one thing, "pesticides" are not sprayed to control weeds, they are sprayed to control pests - bugs and insects! Herbicides are used to control weeds.
Secondly, studies have proven that home gardeners use up to 10 times as many chemicals per square foot on their home gardens than most farmers use on their fields! And your local golf course is even significantly worse than home gardens! And all those chemicals wash off into our drinking water and do more damage than the few chemicals used sparingly by most farmers. Even so, the local family farmer who has been farming his land for generations still has to go to several chemical biology classes and pass a very difficult written test in order to be allowed to use ANY chemicals on his land... So trust me, they have a lot better idea of what they are doing and take a lot better care not to damage our environment than does the typical small gardener. Yet we will trust the food from our neighbor's garden and condemn the soy beans grown so cautiously on America's family farm.
Thirdly, soy farmers all over the US are growing the seeds that other farmers plant in order to grow the soy beans that are used to produce soy products. In fact, my father grows seed beans and has done so since I was 4 years old. One of the first jobs I ever had was to walk through my father's seed bean fields with a sharp hoe to take each of the weeds out by hand. And we did this across the entire 300 acres of beans he farmed!!! He did not and does not use herbicides sprayed on the field to control weeds, and he doesn't use pesticides at all! Yet he still has to abide by the less than .03 percent of foreign material allowed in his harvest by the Seed Bean Companies!
My father is only one of thousands of farmers who grow their crop as seeds that will be sold to other farmers in order to grow their crops the next year. And he sells these seed beans by the hundred weight, hauling wagons and wagons full of seeds to the seed company each year. I don't know how you would expect a few scientists in a lab to "create" enough seed for our American farmers to plant every year. It's just not possible!
Most of the "genetic" work being done on crop plants is done so that research can help the seed companies decide which varieties of seed to cross pollinate with which in order to arrive at the best product to sell to farmers for planting the next season. It is no more 'genetically master minded' than choosing to breed your purebred dog to another purebred of the same or different breed. It is using our ability to predict certain future outcomes in an effort to help make a better product.
Please feel free to try to eat only organic foods if you like, it helps boost the sales of the small organic farmers. But realize too, that even the word "organic" is defined and controlled by the FDA, and nearly EVERYTHING they do has it's roots in politics and big business. Taking your frustration with our society out on the dedicated family farmer isn't going to help the situation one bit. Taking a stand against processed foods in general would do more good for each of us as individuals and for the food related problems in our society than taking a stand against Soy or Corn or Safflowers or any of the other naturally harvested crops grown by the small family farmers in our country.
It doesn't do anyone any good to make blanket statements for which you have no backing. Fear is a powerful tool, but used inappropriately in this circumstance. :nono:

Insecticides control bugs and insects. Herbicides control weeds.
Both are pesticides.

If you already have thyroid problems and take thryoid meds it has been suggested to avoid soy. It is one of those foods that inhibits the absorbtion of thryoid hormone into the body. As far as it causing thyroid disease when you have an otherwise healthy gland, I guess it's possible.

Did you know that New Zealand has banned the use of soya baby milk after research showed that babies being fed soya based formula were receiving the oestrogen level equivilent to 5 contraceptive pills a day.
Soya ia also the 2nd most intolerated food after wheat.
It is not the growing of the beans, organic or not that causes the problems, it is the way it is fermented in the West that does. Tempeh and miso are made from beans that have been fermented in wooden vats for 2- 3 yrs. Asian people only consume a couple of tablespoons of soya a day. They dont have it stuffed in just about every product that lines the supermarket shelves.
Modern fermenting methods are done in aluminium tanks( aluminium is linked with alzheimers) they are processed using acids and alkalis. mmm!!! sounds yummy already.
Soya mimics oestrogen, which is why menopausal women take it in the first place!! However, oestrogen does cause breast growth in males and can make some breast cancer tumours grow faster and yes it does interfere with thyroid function. Therefore extoling its benefits whilst dismissing the possible risks is very contradictory, how can it be so powerful in reducing the symptoms of menopause, yet be so 'harmless'
I am not prepared to take the risk, and avoid it at all costs.
We are currently seeing a massive increase in thyroid disorders over the last 20 yrs or so. Is it just a coincidence that the use of soya products in our food has also increased??? I wonder how many drug companies who make anti cancer and thyroid meds own the soya industry too???

I think that the increased use of pesticides and other harmful chemicals in recent years have contributed to the increase in thyroid disorders, more so than soy.

Hiya concerend male, hope you are well and that we are not frightening you too much about food.
I prefer to drink rice or oat milk, not for any aesthetic reasons but because I have hypothyroidism and I am prone to high cholestrol as a result.
They both are fortified with calcium but are very low fat. They make coffee look very strong but give it a lovely nutty creamy flavour. porridge is just divine too.
its good to drink cold from the fridge, and can be used in most recipies that require milk.
have you tried either of them yet?
take care

Thanks daisy01,
No, I haven't tried rice or oat milk before. I recently received a natural foods/drinks coupon booklet in the mail, and I think there's a coupon for rice milk in it. So I'm going to get some rice milk soon and see how I like it. Do you get your rice milk at the regular grocery stores, or a health food store?

you can buy both rice and oat milks in the supermarkets here in the uk, they are much cheaper there than in healthfood stores.
As I said in my last post, I have to watch my saturated fats but I dont like skimmed or semi skimmed cows milk, These are an ideal alternative.
hope you are having a good weekend
take care
