I started Avonex in January, and it seems like I've been sick more than I've been well the last 10 months. Every time I turn around, I've got tonsillitis, or a cold, or even a cut that gets infected and won't heal. I'm assuming that Avonex slows MS by suppressing the immune system in some way, and I'm wondering if it's worth it to do the Avonex anymore if I'm going to be sick all the time. I've thought about switching to Copaxone and see if the side effects are better, don't like the idea of a daily shot, tho. Does Copaxone suppress the immune system a lot too? Do you all find that you are sick a lot more often with the meds?

Hi crystal,
I don't know of Avonex being an immune suppressant as such. I've been taking it for years and years, and if anything have had fewer colds and infections than I used to. Also have been taking Amantadine which is an anti-viral medication.
I would check with your doctor and look for other reasons for your increased infections. All the best.
