Hi Everyone,
Just wondering if anyone uses one of those tinnitus maskers that are like a hearing aid and are used to drown out the tinnitus sound? It has got me on an uproar this evening and I really can't take it. Advice for tinnitus seems to be that you have to tune it out, but it bothers me so much. I can't just tune it out. I was just wondering if this device really helps.
Thanks,
Gloria

I play lots of music just loud enough to distract me from the ringing. Lots and lots of music. Maybe about 8 or 9 hours a day of it. It's the only thing I have found that helps.

Thanks Xevookie for the advice. Music seems to bother me more. Maybe because I know the noise is still in my ears and sometimes it makes the music sound staticy. I try to be outside as much as possible because the natural sound of nature does seem to take it away but it is starting to get cold here and don't think I will be spending too much time outside.
Thanks for the advice.

Get a husband who breathes loud and snores!! The snoring is so distracting that you don't notice the buzzing! :) Seriously though...I've heard a fan can mask the sounds.

My poor mother suffers from tinnitus. She has gone past the point where other noise covers up the roaring factory inside her head. Maskers unfortunately make it worse for her as does music and radio talkback which used to help. Her tinnitus comes from an operation way back in 1943 for a mastoid, she also has a blood disorder so can't try gingko biloba or other vitamins which help to thin the blood and her epilepsy rules out some other herbs. The cilia in her ear have all been destroyed by the operation. She has to be in relative quiet with the TV on just above the tinnitus to get some relief. She is 74 years old and has had the tinnitus for 60 years. Is there any answer??

Hi madfem,
I can sympathise with your mother. It is an awful condition. Did she have her mastoid bone removed? My MRI showed some mastoiditis after my ear infection, but I was told that it was gone now because I show no physical signs of it. The music does not help me either. Actually it just makes me feel worse. The tv doesn't seem to bother me much and usually does tone it out some.
Did she ever have one of those maskers that look like hearing aids. I was just wondering if they work. I'm not even sure where to get them because I can't find anyone that sells them. I'm going to ask my doctor when I go on Tuesday (I hope he has a lot of time for me, because I have so many questions for him.) I'm not sure what the extent of damage there is in my ear, but I'm still hoping it will go away. The herbs didn't help me. I tried them for a few months.
Take care - Gloria
