Has anyone else had a small bowel resection? I had one 1 yr ago and still have very loose foul smelling stools and horrendous wind. I am not sure if this is a common side effect, which will eventually go away. I had my resection due to adhesions which had wrapped themselves around my small bowel.
I have been taking pro and pre biotics for around 6 weeks now but it hasnt made any difference.
Any ideas/ suggestions would be more than welcome

You know when you had your resection was the adhesion due to a area of induration? The reason im asking is that the gastro doc found an area of induction and Cancerdad said that it could be an area of adhesion attached to my colon but its located in my rectal tract of my colon, also i have been passed around from my hospital to my Gp and they are not commiting themselves to a diagnosis untill i see the gastro doc and that is still about four weeks away, also im still waiting for my barium test before then.
You have had a resection, if it comes to it and i need a resection what kind of an ordeal is it as i have never had any major surgery before and it scares the living crap out of me at the prospect, how long were you off work for when you had your resection?

What area of your intestines were removed? It can make a difference as to how foods are absorbed.

hi daisy; i have had two small bowel resections. one in 1988 and one in 2000. since the one in 2000, i have had nothing but the kind of stools you describe. how much of your intestine was removed? i have about one third left now. i have been diagnosed with some degree of shortl bowel syndrome. is there anything else i can try to answer for you? :)

hiya Andy, i felt fine after about 2 weeks post op and was able to return to work. ( i have an office job, but wouldnt reccomend going back for at least 1 month if you have a strenous job) the post op pain wasnt that bad either. they gave me a button to push when I felt pain and it gave me a dose of morphine I only had this for 2 days and then I was walking around the ward. once you are on your feet, its much easier especially if you walk upright and dont bend over. I had decided to stand straight right from the word go to see what pain I would be up against(if that makes sense) It really wasnt as bad as i expected.

the tiredness was a major factor for me though, but I feel sure that was my undiagnosed hypo thyroidism.
My colorectal surgeon advised me to stay away from food that could possibly cause food poisoning for at least 6 weeks post op (burger vans, undercooked eggs, soft cheeses etc) I just made sure I got plenty of water and ate only fresh foods. you can recover quickly if you listen to your docs and more importantly what your body tells you. if they advise a resection then go for it your health has got to come first. I know how you are feeling and the wait to find out is the worse bit. Its so bl**dy annoying that it take so long to get appointments and answers here in the UK though, so try not to worry too much. daisy

I only lost 20.5cm of my bowel and dont know which bit, all i know is 2 strands of adhesions pulled part of my small bowel right down into my pelvis and made it go necrotic. (the pain of that was far worse than childbirth)
my colorectal doc thinks the join in the resection may just be too tight and my food is backing up then being rushed through hence the loose foul smelling stools and excessive wind.
I have my oscopy's next week so hopefully will get some answers.

Im glad you can through your resction so fast, i work at the moment in a semi office electrical aspect so i sometimes lift heavy things but my colleges know and are helping me out, though i am applying for that job in the Hannor Hospital, i know another prospective NHS worker!

All these things that go through your head that may have to be done and then you get people like yourself that has already gone through more than you should that takes things in your stride, i dont know how you do it?

Hi Andy,

From your previous thread I gathered that you might be looking a resection of the large bowel rather than the small one. This is a bigger deal than small bowel resection so you should anticipate a longer recovery period. Might want to think about 1 - 3 months off work possibly longer.

I don't want to alarm you, but thought that you would want to know especally as you are looking for anotherjob and the sick benefits of a new job may not kick-in for a while.
