I recently had a sleep study and it took me five hours to enter the REM phase (it is supposed to take a person 90 minutes). Does anyone have any suggestions as to why or what could be the problem. Please any info will help. thanks

My study said I never entered REM. All they did was change my medication. They never rechecked it to see if things improved.

Originally I was scheduled for a split study. However, I am now having to go back for a second night. My understanding is that I never reached REM sleep. It will not be til after I go back that the MD and I will discuss treatment options.

I'm just the opposite. My study showed I entered REM after only 15 minutes! So they want to do a MSLT to see why.

Most likely you were tense and didn't sleep normally at the sleeplab or simply the machines didn't catch it. I went into REM in 1 minute flat each time... scary. And 5 years later at another facility and I did have problems but there was a huge difference. My first sleeplab was done in a hotel looking room in a brand new midwest facility... my second test was done in a 'closet' (no windows) next to the elevator shift, which they were fixing that night and slept on old, old nasty hospital beds. I talked to the sleeplab ppl there and they said they often get ppl retesting 3-4 times before getting anything conclusive. Hmm... someone is making a profit here. Don't give up hope. The tests are not always conclusive. And find a doctor that you trust and talk to the sleep-study lab staff, whom I've always found to be very wonderful.

And don't give up! I've seen all sorts of specialists and attitudes varies greatly!! I had one of the best docs in the nation and I had to stop seeing her when she couldn't seem to remember how to write a script and also kept forgetting what I had...
