Hi everyone, I just have a question.
I was told recently by my doctor that my back slopes way more than it should (this was found on accident after an automobile accident). He said I need to do exercises or something to keep it from getting worse and possibly straighten it. He said if I don't, I could have serious pain in just a few years...he said it is like a congenital defect or something? I don't know...I just need some advice please.
thanks

Hi - It would have been nice the dr you saw could have suggested how he thought you might achieve this goal. I have over the last 2 and a half months learnt to walk with a very up right posture. For the last 15 years or so I have been slouching fwd placing extra strain on my lower spine. I have achieved this my walking on a treadmill placed in such a way that I can see my reflection from side on - I was able to monitor my progress. It wasnt easy and I experienced pain in my thoracic spine which had to be treated as part of te process. Now that my spine is use to a more upright stance I am having very few problems with my thoracic spine
Scolliosis sufferers often swim to alleviate or assist with the prevention of a serious curviture in the spine. I would encourage you to see a physiotherapist who could design a program to help you achieve this goal step by step and without any undue pain.
Hope this is of some help to you

Hi, I have a curvature too. I was just wondering if it affects both sides or just one, as it effects only one side for me, and I would like to know the secret exersizes myself! lol I thought I'd have to wear a brace.

I'm actually not sure if mine affects both sides or not...do you mean discomfort wise? I haven't learned any really good exercises yet, although I've been experimenting and so far, all it has done is made it stiff and hurt like heck! I'm not sure were I'm going to go with mine, I probably need to get advice from another doctor who is willing to work with me!! LOL. Anyway, I've been working on doing some research, so if I find anything I'll let you know!!!

I would imagine doing the exercizes and keeping your back as straight as possible would be painful. I know I can only keep my back straight for about 2 minutes before I need to relax it back to it's comfortable state. What I meant by one side or both is I only slouch on my left side. My left shoulder blade sticks out a considerable ammount compared to my right. Is that the same for you? Not sure if it makes more difference, except that Losy mentioned using a mirror to keep track of position, and it might be harder to do so if only one side is affected, or maybe not? I'm babbling now but I ask because for me to straighten my back, I have to first lift my whole upper body, and then also adjust my left shoulder, and I'm not always sure if I'm doing myself good or bad :)
Darn backs! We just need to find a nice (FREE!!) massage parlour :D Oh but I will mention that chiropractic adjustments were helpful for the pain, for about 30 minutes to an hour. I think I just undid all their good work because after that ammount of time I felt the need to slouch again, but that is an option for you :)

Thanks for replying again, I guess I should clarify that mine is not crooked sideways, but rather it is too far sloped forward in my upper back and dips in too far in my lower back....which makes my torso look really short. The correct terminology for mine is lordosis and kyphosis. Thanks for the advice by the way, I need to find an affordable chiropractor...lol....things just aren't cheap these days I guess...
Anyway, good luck with yours and maybe we can work on this together!!
