For those of you taking this drug... can you please tell me what symptoms it is prescribed to help with in MS?

I "feel like" my symptoms aren't going to go away and that this may be my "normal"... so if I can treat the sx then maybe I can feel alittle better! Thanks

I take it for the parsthesia (numbness), and I too think it is keeping me functional.

Lilc,

So you've not had any side effects with it? Like drowsiness or blurry vision? One dr.told me it's main complaint is blurred vision and my neuro said drowsiness is what he fears (for me).

spasticity, numbness, helps with my gait, I could not do without either
when I first started it, it made me real tired, but after a few days I adjusted that tiredness into my normal fatigue
as for blurry vision, I do have blurry vision but I don't think that I can attribute that to the neurontin

Hey everyone, this is a great topic of discussion and I thank you all for your input. I will see my neuro on Tuesday and I think I'll ask him if I can try it. Good to know, Stephanie, that it can make you tired at first and then you got used to it. I have one friend with CNS problems and he said Neurontin helped him a lot. And a friend of another friend had a head injury, takes Neurontin and said it even helps with her cognitive function. Sounds like something definitely worth a try! THANKS!! And thanks Curious for opening up the topic!

I take it for, pain, numbness, my gait: it's improved. Did I mention pain? Spacity. I too cannot do without it. If I take it too late my body will let me know, by HURTING!!!!!

Keren, et al,

has anyone had it work positively for itching as well? I have the numbness, pain, pins and needles, so that would be great to have help with that. but boy would i like to have something to take away the itching!

Yeah the itching, I hate the itching

I it does help, I know that I still itch, but just not as much and it for sure helps with that surface pain that lays right below the skin, ohh that drives me nuts. once you start taking this med it goes out of your system in like 6 hours, and I can always tell I feel shaky it is just amazing

One side effect is small bumps on my fingers, but when your fingers are numb that is not such a big deal ;)

This is like a miracle drug, 10 years ago I had a seizure problem and I took it for that. I am now wondering if the seizure problems were a precursor to the MS??

That seals it, I'm asking for it on Tuesday!

Steph, that seizure you had could be related, I'd think, but it also could be unrelated. Seems like this stuff is so complicated. We kinda tossed that around, a while back, if brain injury (which stroke or seizures etc are!) could "cause" MS...but no one really knows. Everything I've read, at least, says trauma does not cause MS, but it can bring on the sx. A precursor? certainly a possibility, I'd guess....

thx, Shad

kchs1 and stephanie... You mentioned that the neurontin helps with your gait... in what ways? Walking is my major problem and that is where I am looking to find some relief. My muscles are extremely stiff in my knee and ankle of my left leg and I can not walk properly. I take Baclofen for spasticity and it does help. But if Neurontin helps with spasticity as well as these other things... I think that would be better for me. So again... if what ways has your gait improved due to the neurontin? Thank you all for posting

I was about to reply earlier but got interrupted. I wanted to say that the gradual ramp-up approach I took worked well to counter the drowsiness side-effect, and certainly taking most of it at bedtime is a good thing. It hadn't occurred to me that it might help with the cognitive stuff, but I'm feeling like I'm a bit sharper than I was 3 months ago. Maybe it helps?

Curious
I feel shaky and stiff legged when I walk w/out taking the neurontin, last fall before I got was diagnosed, I remember shelpping up to the hospital for an MRI and thinking, I must look like a monster :o my walking was so bad

In the morning I walk all stiff and I have to like grab at things to steady myself, but I eat and take all my meds and then I feel better
I can walk like normal I still get stiffness in my joints but my walking is much improved.

Shadow I see my neuro on Wednesday and I will bring up the seizures :)

It helps with my gait in that I can actually form steps and even go up and down stairs unassisted now. Pre iv steriods and neurontin I was unable to walk unassisted period!

My neuro has me take it at night for muscle spasms. It tends to make me sleep better too. I take it before I lay down, because I'm flying pretty high when it hits me... but without it, I'm awake about every half an hour. With it, I'm only up once or twice a night.
