I just had a new crown placed on a very sensitive tooth. Well, the dentist was an idiot and did it wrong, so I had to go to my old dentist. He didn't cover the root that was giving me the most problems. He is going to remove the crown this week, and I am terrified that it will hurt and that my poor sensitive tooth is going to come out with the new crown! How do they take it off, and will it hurt? Will my tooth be safe?

They pop it of like a bottle cap using a sharp tool. It might hurt some but, you ask for a shot of novacain.
I can't make a 100 percent guarantee that your tooth won't split or break. It really depends upon the condition of the tooth when it was crowned. If you had a really big, deep filling in your tooth before it was crowned, the walls will be thinner and more likely to crack.

All and all, the vast majority of the times a crown is removed goes without a hitch and, unless you have severe peridontal disease, it is unlikely that the tooth itself would come loose.

I don't understand how it could hurt if a root canal doesn't hurt. It's all in the skill and experience of the dentist that determines if they know exactly where to put the shot. With my root canal I had one shot.
With other dentists I've had to have four or five for just a filling. Just tell him/her you want it completely deadened before he does it and let us know how it goes. binkie
