View Full Version : How does an Event Monitor work?

Since my PAC's & PVC's have grown worse, my cardiologist wants me to wear an Event Monitor for 30 days.

Is this going to be similar to the Holter Monitor that I had to wear? That things was so cumbersome & uncomfortable.

I read somehwere that you can unhook your Event Monitor to shower & stuff.

But then I also read that it's nothing like a Holter, that its something you hold up to your heart when you have symptoms (which would be very hard to do while in meetings at work, etc).

Perhaps there are different kinds of Event Monitors?

Any info you can give me is greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much.......

I wore a 30 day event monitor in July. It's small - about the size of a cell phone. It's not cumbersome or uncomfortable. The brand I used was CardoPAL, and you may be able to find photos of it somewhere. The device is constantly attached to 2 electrodes on your chest by 2 leads. You press a record button every time you feel a symptom/palpitation and hold still for a minute while the device saves a recording of your heartbeat (along with a minute prior to your having pressed the button), and then you transmit the recording over the phone to the company that monitors the device.

I found it to be really simple and easy. It's easy to hide under shirts/sweaters.

Hi, thanks so much. That really helps, it sounds much less cumbersome than the Holter monitor.

I guess I just wonder how I will handle this when I am in all day meetings & stuff...... I hate to advertise my personal health issues, you know?

Anyway - thank you for taking the time to reply, I do appreciate it.

I forgot to mention that you do indeed take the leads off before you shower.

Also, it would be very easy to hide in a meeting, unless you had a palpitation - in which case the machine would make a beeping sound when you pressed the record button. But, you could just take the device off during the meetings. If you have many in a day, then not catching a few probably wouldn't make a huge difference. But talk to your doctor about it. Good luck!
