I will be getting a Keller Bunionectomy on my big toe next week and wonder if anyone else ever had one and what to expect. I understand that there will be no implant or pins. The bones will be cut and the space will fill in tissue according to my podiatrist.
Thanks in advance

I had a Keller in Jan '03, when I was 42. My joint was still painful and my toe was quite short and stuck up so I had an implant in Sep '03, the implant didn't seat properly so I had a bone graft from my hip and a fusion 13 weeks ago. Before the fusion I went to a pod who actually yelled about the 1st doc who did the Keller and said he should have started with the implant particularly for my age. The Keller was not for a bunion, but for cartilage damage/arthritis in the joint. The implant should've worked if it had "seated properly". I debated replying because everyone is different and I didn't want to scare you but for the past few years I've been worse than before the 1st surgery and just now able to occasionally walk without a limp and still have significant discomfort limiting my activities drastically. Fusion is a last resort so at 45 my life is permanently changed. I also realize that if I hadn't done anything the original problem would be worse by now too so there is no 20/20 hindsight in this case. Best of luck, I know these have been successful for many but you might ask him for more information about implantation first.
