Everytime I use something to try to help my nails grow better, the product seems to work for awhile, then gradually my nails go right back to the way they were. I have used several different products and this always happens. For the past year I have been using the mixture of jojoba oil, almond oil and Vit E, according to your recommendations. My major problem with my nails is peeling. This worked very good for quite awhile, and I saw the most improvement in my nails then with anything else, but all of a sudden one by one my nails started to peel again. I am being very careful not to put any hand lotion on my nails. I do use Burt's Bees Lemon Butter Cuticle Creme because my cuticles are very dry, and the oils don't seem to be enough for them. I use rubber gloves any time I do dishes or clean. I also started using Nail Tek Maintenance Plus. I give myself a manicure every week. I feel like I am doing so much to make my nails healthy but nothing seems to be permanent.

Do you have any idea why products only seem to last for awhile with my nails. I thought after using this oil for a year, my nails would be very healthy.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks, Laurie

It just might be a seasonal thing if the nails start peeling at certain intervals. Keep up the oil, but be careful with the Nail Tek as nail strengtheners contain Formaldehyde which will dry out the nail plate and might lead to peeling.

I didn't realize that the Nail Tek Maintenance Plus had the formeldahyde. I guess I should have just checked the ingredients! Anyhow I will discontinue using it. Is just plain nail polish ok? What about the Burt's Bees cuticle oil that I've been using. Is that ok to use?

Thanks for all the advice.

Burt's Bees Cuticle oil is okay as long as it contains jojoba oil, otherwise, it will just sit on the surface of the skin and act as a lubricant. As for the formaldehyde - it is in polish of all sorts because it acts as a preservative for the polish to give it a longer shelf life. Most polishes contain lesser amounts than what is found in nail strengtheners, but it is still there. It is also called Formalin, so read the ingredients. Some polishes will say they contain no formaldehyde, but they are harder to find adn don't work as well. What you may want to do is go to your local Sally Beauty Supply and purchase a three-way buffer. Lightly buff the entire nail plate surface to remove any peeling with the black side of the buffer. Refine with the white side and shine with the gray side. If you do this right, it will look like you are wearing clear polish. buffing your nails in this manner will also help to seal the nail plate surface from solvents.

The Burt's Bees does not have jojoba oil, but it does seem to help with the dryness on the fingers around the cuticles, so I guess I will continue to use it as long as it isn't causing any nail problems.

Thank you so much Marti. I really appreciate all your expert advice.

I know some people who swear by almond oil to help with dry skin around the nails, had anyone had results with that?

It works much better if you mix no less than half almond oil and Jojoba oil together. The jojoba oil will penetrate the surface of the skin and draw the large molecules of the almond oil in after it. The best 'recipe' is:

2oz. jojoba oil
2oz. almond oil
1/4 oz. vitamin E
