Back in September after an Early miscarriage I started having a burning sensation on my tongue. I went to the Dr's he said it might be a yeast infection and prescribed Diflucan...but this didnt help at all. Its now going into December, I have been put on Diflucan, Some type of steriod and a mouth swish.....all has failed to rid me of this burning tongue. Does anyone know what it can be or how to get it to stop? When I eat or chew gum the pain is not there....im lost and confused.
Thanks

Does the burning move around from one spot on your tongue to another, or several Different areas on your tongue, or is it your WHOLE tongue that burns? When you examine your tongue in the mirror, do you have circular like areas on your tongue where it looks different? If you have these, are they sort of outlined by a light white line?

The tip of my tongue burns and also at times the right side of it towards the back. I dont have any thing in which you described, only weird thing with my tongue ( look wise ) is that I have a crack in the middle...which has always been there. The tip of my tongue looks very irritated and red. I finally spoke to my ent yesterday he ran all sorts of blood tests which came back negative....he said its just something I'll have to live with, it may go away on its own or I may have this forever.

Yuck!
Sorry....you NEED to brush your tongue thoroughly with a toothbrush and toothpaste. You can also use a tongue scraper.
Your tongue should be light pink throughout. Get that gunk cleaned off so that your tongue can be evaluated at every dental visit.
When you brush your tongue, you need to not just get the tip, you need to get the body of the tongue and as back as far as you can get, and get all that nasty stuff off of there. Get a tongue scraper to start with and look at the stuff that comes off. This should inspire you to get the rest off. It will take a month or so of regular cleaning of your tongue to get to a healthy clean state.
As for the burning on your tongue, it could simply be irritated by the smoking and coffee. I tend to get sore red burning spots on my tongue from certain foods. Usually sunflower seeds - mostly all the salt, or acidic foods, too much OJ or Grapefruit or tomatoes. This doesn't mean that I don't eat this stuff, I just watch how much I eat of it.
Or this burning could be a mild form of what is called geographic tongue. With your tongue having the stain and not being a healthy color the DDS may have a hard time seeing these spots fully.
BTW the staining is plaque and bacteria on your tongue that has picked up the stain from your food and drinks. Also what happens when you don't brush your tongue thoroughly and you indulge in heavy coffee and cigarettes you get longer/bigger papillae on the tongue. These are the little bumps on your tongue that may not be so little anymore. Picture a cat's tongue with the scales, this is how your tongue picks up the plaque - in between all these little bumps. When the bumps are longer and look kind of "furry" we call this "Hairy Tongue".
Hope this helps...Good Luck!

Just a thought...burning tongue can be a symptom of low vitamin B 12 levels, so it is worth getting checked.
Low B12 usually needs correcting with B12 shots as tabs are often not absorbed especially with Pernicious Anaemia.
