My husband and I have been trying to concieve for a year and a half now. I have been on clomid for 3-months and no luck. I went to my Dr. appt today and he wants my husband to get checked to see if the problem could be him if it isn't he wants to do an hsg so My question is has anyone ever had one of these and how painful is it?

Hi there-
I'm glad you're having an HSG done. I wish I'd had mine done sooner. When I did mine they found out that my left tube was completely blocked and needed to be removed. It's better to know if there's a problem sooner rather than later. Hopefully your HSG will turn out fine :)
You'll get various responses as to how painful it actually is, because I think we all have a different threshold for pain. I have severe endometriosis, and have always had very painful menstrual cramps, so I guess I am kind of used to pain.
The test is uncomfortable, but if you take a few advil or motrin before, you should be ok.
Good luck to you!
:)

Tresh -
I agree completely with rose. The test is a good thing for anyone who is having problems. It can diagnose many things that can go wrong with trying to conceive. It was EXTREMELY uncomfortable for me, though I have a high threshold for pain, I was not prepared with the Advil ahead of time. Also, the doctor had a hard time getting the tube to go up and had to try several times with me...which I would imagine is not normal for most. I would recommend you take some sort of pain reliever before you go in for the test. And also, relax. It's not terrible, just uncomfotable. If you are prepared, I'm sure it's not as bad. I wish I had know about this website before I had mine...so I could have been better prepared.
Good luck to you. Keep us posted!

Tresh,
I think it is a great idea to do the HSG. I did mine and also found out I have a blocked left tube. but my right one is great.
They other ladies are right that everyone has a different threshold for pain. Me I usually love pain! ha..ha sorry I was a cutter when I was younger.
anyway, My one peice of advise if if you are allergic to iodine let your doctor know. ha..ha
I had mine done and didn't know I was allergic. I bleed for a day or so after and cramped for the whole day, along with throwing up all day and my blood pressure bottomed out. ha..ha! later to find out I had a allergic reaction to the dye. and my Re told me in all his years of doing that test. (he is like 60 something) he has only see this reaction 1 other time. so I would say you are pretty safe. The test itself is uncomfortable. make sure to take some tylenol before you go.
(sorry I don't want to scare you but wanted to tell you the truth)
Good luck

I also had a reaction to the dye - a tingling sensation that began on the soles of my feet and worked its way up my legs. It started about 15 minutes after the test. A couple a Benadryl knocked it out. I would take 4 tylenol or ibuprofen before the test, and have benadryl with you afterward, just in case.
