I am looking for a health insurance plan to use in case of an emergency. I don't need well visits or check ups etc. I only want an affordable plan that will insure me if something expensive happens to my health (like broken leg). I want to protect my assets in case of an emergency. Does such a plan exist?

It used to at least. In the early 90s I carried a Blue Cross plan like that in California. It was a 'catastrophic' plan - huge deductible that more or less was just useful for something severe - like getting hit by a car as a ped.

Generally, Blue Cross has good plans in all states - but I dont know each one individually so I cant guarantee you will get what you are looking for.

Search for high deductible PPO. HMO plans would not be useful for you.

I heard so much about CATASTROPHIC COVERAGE which the administration was touting along with it's Health Savings Plan (now buried with the rest of the vampires I guess.)
Anyway, I, too, thought that such a catastrophic plan might be exactly right for me...say I pick up the first $5 grand (or even $10 grand) and then they fully pay the rest...all this for maybe $100 a month???

I called around the insurance companies in the NYC Metro area...and most of them sounded like they'd never HEARD of such a thing.
But I still hear some of the political pundits bandying the phrase around like it's as common as houseflies. Mystifying.

Does ANYONE have such a plan?
