Hi folks,

I am also posting this on the pain' board.

I am having knee replacement in a few weeks. I want to know if anyone has had the new rotating knee as a replacement, and if the result was better or worse than expected.

My doc prefers the old style, but I would think that having more movement would be worth the possibility of risk of slightly more complications. I want to be able to dance, and the rotating just seems better.

I've scheduled the old style surgery at his advice.

I do have autoimmune diseases. My doc said that the new style sheds microscopic fragments of shavings which cause it to break down faster. I am afraid they would cause an immune reaction. That is why I agreed to go with his advice, but now I am afraid I will wish I'd held out for the new style. What do you think? Anyone?

Thanks!

Hi, looking at the date of your post, it seems that you would have had your knee replacement by now, and i was curious as to the type you had, as it seems to me the rotating one would be better, although quite new, my Doc' says to go with the old style, as yours did. I too want to continue dancing so would opt' for the new one. Have you had any problems, as many other people seem to have, and it's scary. Hope you still look at the boards and you can answer this, and trust everything has gone well for you,and you're back on the dance floor.

There is nothing new about Rotating Platform (aka Mobile Bearing) total knee replacements. They have a long clinical history in total joint replacment. Recent MARKETING efforts from J&J are intended to drive business to surgeons using the J&J product and/or convince patients that the Mobile Bearing knee is better than the traditional (Fixed Bearing) total knee, who then influence thier surgeon to implant an MB TKA. Studies have varied results regarding Mobile Bearing versus Fixed Bearing knee replacements. Some studies report that MB is better, others report FB is better. The vast majority of total knees implanted are Fixed Bearing.

The bottom line is that the best knee replacement for you will be the implant/system that your surgeon is comfortable with and uses regularly. (Who do think would do a better job fixing your Cadillac...the Cadillac dealer or a Buick dealer?)

More than likely your doctor or the hospital doesn't want to spend the $10,000.00 for that knee. My first knee was the old type but my new doctor did the plateform and there is no comparesome. I went back to work in 13 days after my surgery. Mr.J
