Hi, I was wondering if anyone could explain this to me.

On 3/21/05 my TIBC was 246
On 10/12/05 my TIBC was 271
Normal value is 250-450 MCG/DL

What does this mean? Is it good or bad?
I am having some trouble with IDA, but at least I see this went up and not down. Any input would be greatfully appreciated, as I am a wreck over the IDA problem and am scheduled for a colonoscopy on 11/2/05

Ricki23,

TIBC stands for Total Iron Binding Capacity and is measured in order to evaluate your bodys ability to transport Iron. Usually it is taken along with an Iron level and/or Ferritin.

You don't mention if you've had an Iron or Ferritin level done so that make it difficult to interpret the TIBC on it's own.

Generally speaking a high TIBC can indictate Iron deficiency and a low result can indicate that you have too much iron (haemachromatosis).

However, your latest result is normal, which is a good thing. So I shouldn't worry too much. TIBC will fluctuate over time and no two readings will be the same.

Your doctor will intepret this result along with any others you've had done.

Well I had my colonoscopy on 11/02/05, and results were good.
No polyps, no cancer, do have mild diverticulosis.
GI Doc says my colon is not the reason for my anemia problems.
See my PCP on 11/07/05 and see what she has to say.
