I finally got my appointment to the Womans Osteo clinic to see a Dr. Osteo specialist about my Osteo. My GP, although a decent family Dr. was reluctant to get me into the clinic. You have to take control, and push your GP, be forceful, gals and guys, its your body.
The result of the clinic, was within 2 days, the Eli Lilly nurse called me for my first intro, and fact gathering. Looks like some time the week of Oct 24th, she will show me how to inject. For those who have not read my previous posts, I am 54 year young male, family history of Osteo.
My scores 2 years ago were were 3.3 spine and 2.7 hip , and with 2 years of Fosomax, lots of calcium, exercise, I have a net 9% gain in spine, and 1% hip. This was just with Fosomax, calcium, and excercise. I have to be honest, not much additional exercise.
The studies suggest I could see up to another 10% gain spine, and I am hoping for 5% hip with the Forteo. I have lost 2" height, broke tail bone, ribs, toes, fingers hand, so I had enough breakages to qualify for the Forteo. My specialist has me on 18 months of Forteo, then back to Fosomax to hold the bone I gain. I like the idea of gain, then hold, gain then hold. The biophosphates alone can hold, but not nessesarily gain bone for most people.
Seems funny to be happy about sticking a needle in me for the next 18 months, but since I have a family history of Osteo, I have personally seen the longer term results of the crumbling, and pain.
The Eli Lilly Nurse asked if I had a partner who was willing to lean the needle proceedure with me, and I told her my wife would be very happy to lean how to stick needles in me.
The nurse had my family genetic Osteo history, and said maybe you have some good genes as well. I said I do, they are blue, and I am wearing them right now. She got the message real quick, that I will not be a boring patient.

Anyway, I thought I would let you guys know I will be on Forteo very soon.

My husband was also willing to learn how to stick needles in me. That's why I made sure how to do it myself :jester:

I think that when we feel positive abt a treatment, regardless of the disease, it gives us a little edge toward success!

Thanks for sharing your % of gain. I haven't been able to decide on a treatment and am trying to get as much feedback as possible on how much gain "real people" are getting w/the different treatments.

Foxbluff,
Read, read, read. Since you have the ability to be on the internet, take advantage of that gift. Just don't sit there too long at one time hehehe.

Well, I am a "real people", and my gains are not twisted by a heavy exersize program, and or eating changes. I have changed almost no exercise routine. My life style changes are almost zero. Lets be honest, how many of us are actually going to go on a regular basis exersize program, when we haven't for 30 years. I would hazard a guess of less than 20% of us . So, the only thing I have done is just Fosomax, calcium, D etc. and very minor exercise.
I am currently making a bit more of an effort, like parking farther away from the mall doors. If I see a set of stairs to a second floor, I'll take them, rather than the elevator, etc. But actual exersize routine daily, I don't think I am up to that, shame on me right.
So how much more of a gain would I have with exercise, is maybe not as important as knowing that I have a gain from almost zero lifestyle change, but, plus meds.
Of cource I should exercise more, we all should, because it is proven to improve bone health.

Keep reading, but do something, I see way too many people wait way too long, loose way too much bone mass before they take control of their lives.
The risk of loosing bone mass, is far greater than the small risk of some medications out there.
Measure your risks

BoneMan, thanks for your message to me. I do know that I need to start a treatment as soon as possible, but at least I'm now faithfully taking calsium & Vit D which is some effort over what I was making in the past. (:

I had printed out your 1st post because you had given your % of gain. When I read it over I got confused. You said "...with 2 yrs of Fosomax, calsium, & exercise, I have a net 9% gain in spine & 1% in hip....The studies suggest I could see up to another 10% gain in spine & I am hoping for 5% in hip w/Forteo." In the last senctence I know you're talking abt hoping Forteo will give 5% gain in hip. When you say "The studies suggest I could see up to another 10% gain in spine..." does that also refer to what you hope to get from Forteo? If Fosomax was a 9% spine gain in 2 yrs, then I would have thought Forteo in 18 mos would be better than a projected 10%. Am I making any sense at all?!?! (:

Foxbluff,
My gain with Fosomax, may not be indicative of typical Fosomax use, Fosomax's claim to fame is not bone growth, but retension. Some people are happy just to maintain. Fosomax is really there to help you keep the bone you have, not meant specifically to make new bone. My bone mass improvement is not 100% from Fosomax, as I have been doing the calcium etc. A lot of people who take Fosmax, and calcium, don't see as much of a gain as me, and some maybe no gain at all, and maybe others more.
However:
The studies with Foreto show " New Bone ", and on average about a 10% gain. Forteo is specifically made to build new bone.
My goals are to add another 10% bone mass with Forteo, which was the studies average gain. Since I had a gain with calcium, and Fosomax, my gain with Forteo, may exceed the average gain of 10%, because, that 10, is an average.

I hope on the Forteo you do get, at least, the 5% gain in hip. I found it odd that the Fosomax seem to do such a great job on one site (w/out having your prev post in front of me I think the 9% was for spine) and only a 1% on hip.

Yes,
I just asked for my latest numbers to be sent, as I was told 9% spine 1% hip.
The numbers were spine 3.3, now 2.7, hip was 2.7, now 2.4, so that is a lot more than 9 and 1 percent. This was 2 years with Fosomax, calcium, and not a lot of additional exercise.
My age, of 54, Male, may have a lot to do with the gain. Also as a male, I am not fighting an estrogen decrease.
If there were more statistics as to why some people gain, and others not with Fosomax, that would be interesting to see.
