View Full Version : Cooking aroma?

Has anybody ever had an asthma attack from inhaling cooking aromas? I know this sounds weird...

I don't have any food allergies. I take advair, and usually only use my albuterol like once every few months. I don't remember the last time I had an attack. I also have mono right now, but I'm not congested or anything from it. So my mom came for the day to take care of all of my chores (laundry, dishes, shopping, etc.). I was fine until this evening, when she was cooking. She made cabbage soup with lots of vegetables (I know she sauteed some onions and then boiled the soup for a while, but I don't really know what all was involved in the cooking process, since I was flat on my back on the couch). I had an attack gradually come on and I took my inhaler but it is lingering. The only thing that seems different about today is the cooking (sad as it is, I don't cook much, and when I do I don't take the time to get very involved with it, but I'm a grad student, so it's okay).

So has anybody else ever had this happen? Maybe it's just a freak coincidence? Is this even possible?

I was given some spices and a recipe to make a curry. I was fine until i put some cardamon seeds in a pan, i must have lent over at the wrong time and then bang, the aroma hit the back of my throat, my eyes watered and i couldnt breathe.
I used my salbutamol, with no effect and had to use my symbicort inhaler until i felt any better.
I thought it was a coincidental effect of me breathing in at the wrong time, my asthma is well controlled too.
Who knows, but im sticking to ready made sauces in jars in future (lol).
Hope ive been of some help to you.
