I do not feel well rested unless I sleep literally twelve hours a night. I wake up at 3 in the afternoon sometimes. I miss a lot of class for this reason, because even if I go to bed and get 8 hours of sleep, if I have class in the morning I am so tired I just don't care and go back to sleep for hours. Is this NORMAL?

Phew I was starting to wonder if I was the only one!! I have the same sort of problem really but no I dont think it's normal. I'm going to the doctors about it on Tuesday hopefully. Maybe you should go too - have your thryiod and other things tested just to make sure there isnt an underlying cause.

Hey,
Same problem here too, did a sleep study and it took me 5 hours to enter REM! The normal person takes about 90 minutes. I had no signs of restless leg syndrome, but my psychiatrist is starting me out on a medication for that to see if it will help  Its called Requip, have been on it for two weeks, and now I am waking up in the middle of the night and can't get back to sleep. I go back to the doc on nov. 9, will try something new then.

No it's not. You need to get to the doc and get checked out. I have sleep apnea and before I was treated, I would routinely sleep 12-14 hours per day. I have no idea how I made it through college, as I rarely woke up in time for class, and if I did go I fell asleep.

I just assumed that it was a matter of willpower, and if I just tried harder, I would be able to stay awake. I tell you this to encourage you to get treatment. I lost a lot of years to being exhausted, and I never realized how bad it was until I finally got the medical care I needed.

Good luck.

analog, did you have any symptoms of sleep apnea except for being tired all the time? ie snoring, waking up frequently, etc.

I feel like I sleep a full 8 hours a night and I don't have any other symtpoms, but they say you can have sleep apnea and not even show any symptoms except extreme fatigue.

I went to the doctors this morning about being tired. Told him that usually I get 12-13 hours sleep per night and that I'm still always exhausted and dont feel well rested. very helpfully he just went 'hmmmm well thats normal.' Erm I'd be interested to see who's sleep patterns he's seen if that's normal. Quite annoyed now actually!!

Hello Tonya

I also take the medication called, "Requip." I was prescribed this by my neurologist because of the body jerking and tremors that I have. I have been taking this med since July and it has helped me. But now I am wondering if this med could be the cause of waking multiple times during the night after reading your post. Are you sure that it is the Requip that makes you wake up throughout the night?

I do basically the same thing. Sleep 12-13 hours, get up, sit down and fall to sleep again. When I went to my MD, he scheduled a stress test. Afterwards, he said that I was out of shape. DUH! Like I don't know that. How can a person get into shape when all that person can do is sleep.

Yeh I know what you mean! I'm not always too bad but I do have days like that - where I just have to sleep all day. I play football twice a week for Uni but I'm only in net so it doesnt use up a great deal of energy and I think it's because of this that he thinks there isnt anything wrong.
