I've been considering this syndrome for awhile now, as for years I've had a terrible time not only sleeping but also getting up, and describing myself as an insomniac did not feel right as I can sleep, but only under certain conditions, so let me give you some examples:
If I go to bed early-ish (9/10pm) I will often sleep no more than 5 hours.
I find I have a 'perfect sleep-time' if I keep on an exact schedule (go to bed between midnite & 1am, wake up at 9:45am) but any change what-so-ever to that and I am off schedule, starting with a very late night, and keeping that schedule going is a challenge.
I feel I can barely make it through a day on a healthy ammount of sleep (7-8 hours), and inless on the schedule described above, I prefer 11 to 12 hours.
I want to sleep. I try to sleep. But I do not sleep! And even if I do, most nights it takes 30 minutes or more to achieve that (and that's a good night).
I will go days of not sleeping for 20-30 hour periods, only getting 5-6 hours of sleep a night/day, and then sleep 14 hours or more.
Enough examples? :p I'm really curious to hear what you guys have to say. This is awfully annoying to me. I'm 'lucky' in the sense that I don't have any peticular reason to get up in the morning, so I'm not losing and jobs here, but it doesn't help with my mood, be it depression or just plain frustration!
Also, for those that deal with this, what works for you? I've only had one sleeping pill work in the past, and it still took half an hour to sleep on. Sadly I don't recall the name (small pill that was desolved under the tongue - thought it might be ativan but I take that for anxiety and have tried it for sleep, but it really doesn't have any effect)..

Wow, really? I'm not in Seattle though. Canadian here :) This sleep stuff stinks! In the past few days it's been terrible though. If I get off schedule, any chance of normal sleep goes completely out the window. I was sleeping 5 hours a night for the past week. Finally got 9 hours last night. Will probably go to sleep at 6 or 7 pm as I've been up since 2:30am! Ridiculous. You have any luck with... -anything-? Ever have a sleep test done? I hear they're expensive :/
