I had root canal done in upper molar. All three nerve channels cleaned out. Went back two days later after tooth was left open to drain and when he was cleaning out one of the canals it hurt like heck! He had to give me novocaine. My question: Why would it still hurt like that if the nerve was removed?

Hello - I am going through the same thing right now. Do you know what tooth it is? Mine is #14 (upper left molar). I just got back from the dentist and he had to take out all the points he put in when he did the root canal and clean out the tooth for the second time in a month. My tooth hurts all the time and there is no way my dentist could have worked on it without Novacaine. I would have gone through the ceiling. Now all I have in the tooth is a piece of cotton. And let me tell you, he was not happy about having to rip out all the work he had done. I hope someone can tell us why our teeth would still hurt when supposedly
the nerve is gone. HELP!!!!!!

It's amazing that they don't give novacaine just as a precaution, knowing that you might still have left over infection and ligament pain. I also wonder if you should wait longer than two days -- maybe 2 weeks, to have it cleaned out again and filled because then the swelling and infection will have time to subside. This is my second root canal and the first one I had they told me to come back in two weeks rather than a couple of days and that worked out better.
