So far from reading on the boards I have heard that lexapro and paxil have caused a lot of weight gain, is this accurate, do you guys think that any others have caused a lot of weight gain? Have any worked well without affeecting appetite/weight?

It is common that Many people on Antidepressents experience weight gain over the long haul. I believe it is suspected that some of these antidepressents can Lower your metabolism and that is the reason for the gain.

But Some People (I included) have experienced the opposite. I recently experience what I would classify as a "Mild" Depression. A Lot caused by my weight and my inability to control my hunger and eating. I was feeling sad very ofton, but It never affected me greatly to the extent of truly hindering my day to day activities. My Doctor put me on Effexor and the Very First day I noticed a huge difference. The Effexor has Killed my food cravings and a lot of my hunger. In The Past If I tried to stick to a 1700-1800 Calorie a day diet I would alwasy be hungry and would crave junk food. Now I dont crave junk food (Havent had any in 6 weeks) and I can eat 1200 Calories a day and not feel hungry. I have Lost 21lbs in the last 6 weeks.

So I guess it is just different from person to person.

I took paxil a few years back and I lost weight(alot). My mother takes wellbutrin and has gained from 132 to 186 in 5mts. I think the meds. affect everyone differently. If your depressed and female, weight gain is deffinently not something you need.

Yes, pipermac is right, it is different for every person so there is really no way to tell you that one or another causes weight gain. See, you say you have heard Lexapro causes weight gain, where I have heard fmo several people that they lost weight. I don't really believe the pills MAKE you lose or gain weight, I believe you feel differently when you take them which in turn affects your eating and exercise habits.

I am taking Lexapro for anxiety and I have an increased appetite simply because I am feeling so much better. I could easily see myself gaining weight simply because I am eating more, so I am having to balance that with increased exercise.

i have been taking effexor for over a year and a half, and at first it was the greatest thing. i was so happy and relaxed and i ate like never before. I think it is the way your body reacts to the meds and if it makes you happy and content then you may or may not gain weight - but i did - I gained about 65 lbs. in about 4 or 5 months. Now I am trying to get off this crap, and having BAD withdrawals , but I am determined to get off them and lose this weight. That is making me depressed right now , but I am gonna fight it. Good Luck to you

umm this is what makes me not wanna go any any pills. Weight is a huge deal for me and if I gained any weight I would probably get more depressed. :(
