I'm trying to figure out if there is any sort of correlation between whether someone went to a co-ed school or a gender-specific school and development of an eating disorder.
it would be really helpful if you would just take a second of your time and tell me what type of school you went to.
thanx
i went to an all girls school, what about you?

Hey!
I always went to mixed schools. I do think goin to an all girls school could be bad tho because girls tend to end up being rather competitive with dieting etc. On the other hand, there is not the issue of losing weight to try and impress the boys... For me though, I think goin to a dancing school that was all girls was v v bad for my ed.

i kinda doubt there's much of a correlation. you can probably find some connections, as i'm sure you can probably find connections with TONS of other things -- family's societal level, divorced parents, how well you did in school, chosen career path, whatever. i think ed's are pretty wide-spread and lots of different things affect them, as we all know. they're behavioral, emotional and psychological, so i'm not sure how great of an effect an all-girls school could have. i think a lot of pieces have to line up exactly right and then all of the sudden you've got an ED and well . . .
but, just cuz i like that your post is something different, here's my info! (keep in mind though that my ed didn't start until i was 21 and well out of high school, so i don't know if this counts). I went to a totally co-ed suburban school and DEFINITELY didn't worry about what i ate in any way more than normal healthy behavior. (neither did my friends) sure we wanted to look cute for the boys, but that came down to makeup, hair and clothes. i also was always very confident in my looks and body and ate whatever i wanted at that time (seriously, Suzie-Q's for a morning snack after i'd had like eggos or something for breakfast! lunch wasn't usually too healthy either . . .), so i'm not sure if i count in this post.

I went to catholic school for a while and then regular high school, that was a zillion years ago and girls didn't eat much at school back then, it was either to lose weight, not hungry, or just because. I don't see a correlation myself ( I did a master research project for social work on eating disorders, and yes I have one), competition is fierce whether it is a girls school, boys school, or a mix. Some people have to be the best athlete, the best cheerleader, the most popular, the smartest, the skinniest, the prettiest, they would be that way even if they didn't go to school. Certain personalities seem to be geared toward the development of ED, doesn't matter where you put them and it certainly isn't about competition, it is a need but not that one.
