Hello all

My doctor just prescribed Ambien because I have a bad case of insomnia due to a really hard breakup. I am a little nervous to take this medication as I hear that you can become addicted and go through withdrawal. How long can you take ambien till you become dependant. Can anyone share there thoughts and expierence with this drug. Im nervous  .

I have taken it before. But it gives me halusinations (sorry im a horrid speller). i have taken it since then and as long as you can get to sleep you just have vivid dreams. My boyfriend took it and he awoke vn the middle of the night and went to the bathroom but on the way started up a conversation with my space heater. i brought it up the next morning and he had a very distant memory of it but thought it was a dream, it was one of the funniest things i have ever seen. he thought the heater was an alien, a nice one but the alien wouldnt talk loud enough for him to hear, all he could make out was a kind of humming(duhh its a heater it humms as it blows out hot air). He and i take it when it is necesary. We neither have felt any need for it or desire to abuse it. The halusinations are funny but the person having them doesnt remember and it only happens if they wake up. its like your dream continues for a few minutes after you wake up. That is wth a normal dose. We dont evther of us do any form of drugs but drug abuse and alchole(see cant spell at all) abuse run in the famly so we are always on the watch out. But we didnt feel urged to use them again.

I have to agree with the hallucinations part of Ambien. It's a pretty strong drug and I didn't like it at all. I had heard nothing but good things about it, but it gave me really bad cold night sweats and a really upset stomach in the morning. Maybe just try a really small dose at first if you're worried about how it will affect you. If you have any bad reactions to it though, I would stop taking it right away and talk to your doctor again. As far as becoming addicted, I haven't heard of anyone really going off the deep end with it. As long as you take it for what it's for (to sleep) and don't abuse it, you'll be fine.

yeah, i would have hallucinations too.. :D first, i'd be laying in bed then the room starts spinning then i'd see these tiny little creatures hopping around then i'd suddenly start laughing, then i'd fall asleep for 6 hours straight (long run on sentence.. :D ). anyway, i've stopped taking it since i didn't want any addictions. the way i see it, if i only sleep a couple hours a night, so be it. i usually feel fine and get work done during the days regardless anyway so i'm not worried. luckily for you, you can pinpoint what's causing the sleeping problems. i can't.

I was under the impression that there wasn't much of a chance for physical addiction, however pyschological is another story. I have heard that if Ambien is taken too frequently and one tries to go off of it abruptly, there can be rebound insomnia. I have had no negative effects whatsoever, just a full night's sleep with normal dreams.

I went to be assessed for a sleep study today. The MD told me that he wanted to start me on Ambien. However, he did not give me a prescription and I did not ask. As a hospital social worker, I have heard MDs on my unit talk about how much they dislike Ambien. It is never prescribed for any of the patients who are having trouble sleeping. The program director has said that he does not like Ambien because he is concerned that an individual would not sleep eight hours (as it says in the Ambien TV commercial). He said that if a person does not get the required eight hours sleep, he would still be under the influence of the medication. I have never heard any of the MDs say anything about the risk of hallucinations. However, I do not invalidate what the other posters have said. They have actually taken Ambien themselves.

I am sorry that you are going through such a bad time.

Don't worry what these people are telling you about hallucinations.

That probably won't happen to you.

I have had a prescription to Ambien for about 6 months now.. Don't take it everyday, and it doesn't cause me any problems at all.

It really works just like they say. Take it 30 minutes before you're read to go to bed on an empty stomach, lay down... relax.. and feel the good vibes!

Seriously, don't let other peoples experiences scare you. Your doctor decided this was your best option, and he's the doctor, not any of us.

I take 5mg.

If you were given 10mg you could just try cutting it in half and taking 5mg to see it makes you feel.

You should get a great nights sleep! SERIOUSLY!

Thanks for everyones input! I took the ambien last night I cut the 10mg in half. I did not have any hallucuinations the only thing weird that happened was that I could kind of hear the conversations that were going on in my head if that makes any sense at all?? I did not sleep for the full 8 hours but did get about 6 hours of sleep. So I will take this pill to help me for now.

Oh and thanks bulletinboard25 for your advise!

well they're not crazy hallucinations!! they just feel like you've begun dreaming without actually falling asleep yet and you may or may not have them. either way, you should stay away from any type of medication.

I take Ambien now and then and never had a bad reactions to it. I have taken two pills at one time but found one is enough. I get to sleep in about 30 minutes. No morning side effects either.

Has anyone experienced diarrhea as a side-effect?

I have Irritable Bowel Syndrome, too.. so it is hard to say if Ambien is what's causing diarrhea or just the IBS... but diarrhea was listed as one of the bigger side-effects of the medicine..

Well last night I took a full 10 mg of Ambien I had been cutting them in half. Well I had the hallucinations that everyone has talked about. I wound up calling my mom and telling her what was happening to me and I could not even remember if I really called her in the morning??? It seemed like my carpet was rippling up off the floor. Also I have a pillow case with cats on it and they were moving all over the place . This was scary for me. I guess I will have to go back to not sleeping.

With Ambien, I felt like I was in a video game, like things were in slow motion or something. I've been taking it for a couple of weeks and feel that I am developing an immunity to the drug. I got a better night's sleep with Nyquil last night! Hope this helps...
