i want somethin like xanax, like a lot of you are on.
but my doc wont let me. she doesnt want me on anything, im on beta blockers which she doesnt even want me on! and they are not great, all they do is stop your heart from beatin so hard and fast for a few hours.
i am so fed up of this, its getting to the point where i now feel depressed (again) and angry, i am so tired of this battle everyday. this thing i have to think of everyday! it is killing me! i hate my life! {REMOVED}
what can i do? my doc also said no other docs around here will prescribe me a benzo! why not?! its either that .. {REMOVED}

to litten
I have been like you and I know how you feel
as well as meds, we all need to learn new ways of relaxing and calming ourselves, msot of us breathe the wrong way do try to breathe deep and slow when tense or anxious it always helps, also relax your muscles, dont tense up or fight back, just accept whatever happens
beta blockers are of some help but arent a magic cure, the dose can be adjusted to suit how you feel, ask doc.
getting xanax or any benzo is becoming more difficult, does doc think you are a drug addict who needs xanax because of running out of drugs? offer to take a drug screen test to show that you arent, ask doc to prescribe an antihistamine tranquilliser
you may benefit from an antidepressant med, these can help both with depression and anxiety
a good doc should talk back and reassure you but some docs just sit there and listen

wow i am sorry to hear that they wont at least give you a script for a few pills just to see if it works for your anxiety.. I have been to many different DRs and none of them had a problem giving me xanax if i asked for it.. but they all know i was suffering with anxiety and also knew the ADs would just make me have really bad side effects..
bjust because your DR says "no other docs around here will prescribe you a benzo!" id get a second opinion anyway just because you DR says it you dont have to just accept it and not try a new DR that may understand better and be willing to try you on one..

thanks both of you for the replies.
hry, what is an antihistamine tranquilliser?
no, my doc thinks the world of me. im a carer for old people which i love and she thinks im such a lovely kind caring sweet person who would make a great nurse.
but she says its because they are "very addictive and life ruining."
i havent actually said to her "xanax", shall i suggest it? like maybe to just give me a couple to try, like when i really really need it?

littlen - I would just tell your dr that your anxiety is out of control and you are having a hard time functioning in day to day life because of it. If she still refuses you might want to go to a different doc. its a shame there are so many great meds out there that doctors are unwilling to prescribe.
If you absolutely cannot get a benzo, you might want to try benadryl from the grocery store...it seems to work for a lot of people and is non addictive...supposedly it calms you and makes you feel better if you feel sick...I have never tried it, but many on another chat board have told me about it.

xanax is not the miracle drug if you are able to cope without taking it then do it. Xanax is addictive and the longer you are on it the more you need. I am currently on 1mg a day, two seperate doses of .5mg and I can tell you the time of day it is without a clock because when it is within a half hour of the next dose I am shaking like a leaf. Does it help? Maybe. I am currently on 5 prescription drugs so maybe it is the combo of all of them I do not notice the xanax by itself. I know it is hell when I miss a dose though
take care

littlen,
I also asked my nurse practioner for xanax (of coarse I don't have a regular doc cause of managed care!): I was going through some medical procedures and my anxiety was off the scale!
She looked at me very weirdly and said no, precribed ativan instead. I had at that point never taken any benzo before in my life! (I'm 46!) And I've been suffering from anxiety/panic for 30 years.
A few months ago I did get a precription for xanax from a different doc. Was thinking this must be a fantastic drug for panic with everything I had read. It did take away a certain tension, but not that much. And as I have no refills for the ativan or the xanax I figure I shouldn't start it in a serious way (taking it daily etc.)
I wish DRS. read this health board. That they could read the stories of people who suffer from this disabling condition. If they did they would KNOW how awful it is and help us without the judgemental crap.

Thanks so much for all your replies. I feel so scared and confused and feel like there is noone and nothing to help me. I do have anxiety every single day, but some days are worse than others, and it is them worse type of days i would just like something to help, like even the smallest dose cut in half or something. I've tried every natural and herbal tablets, drops, remidies etc and they do not make me feel at all different.
Last time i went to the doc, she set me up on a Stress Counciling Course for 22nd nov, but im not stressed. well, i dont think i am anyway. but she just doesnt understand me at all, i know im just going to get in there and walk out, because it is a group thing, and i cant be in a place where there are lots of other people too.
Doc also said a benzo will make me sleepy and i wont be able or allowed to drive (i passed my test a month ago). is that just another excuse not to give it to me? i feel like such a moaning baby and i get so paranoid talking to anyone about my anxiety and on here i do too, and talking to the doc, it feels like everyone is just thinking "shut up, stop moaning, there are lots of other people worse off than you"
:(

benadryl is an antihistamine, these meds sedate many as a side effect
there are other antihistamines promoted as tranquillisers
tell doc that anxiety sufferers seldom have addictive type personalitys and are mostly far too sensible to become addicted to benzos
in general its best to not ask for xanax as it has a bad reputation, just ask for any valium type med and let doc choose, they all work the same way

The 1st time I saw someone, I was prescribed an AD because I was crying, therefore I was depressed. The 2nd time I saw someone, I was prescribed an AD because I WASN'T crying which therefore meant I was depressed. Both times I did not ask for a benzo.
On my 3rd attempt, I point out blank said that I wanted Xanax and that if that doctor didn't see fit to prescribe it, I would keep searching until I found someone who would, and pointed out that they are available illegally and that I was trying to do the right thing by seeing a doctor. I told him that I knew only Xanax would work because years before (that's before the 1st time mentioned above), I was given Ativan and Xanax for what was then, short term anxiety (unexpected death). The Ativan did nothing (could have been a low dose) but the Xanax took care of it. That was it and he gave me the Xanax. I think its best to just shoot straight. If they're not gonna give it to you, they're not. Period. You'll just have to search until you find someone who isn't afraid to prescribe it.

How about natural remedies? My naturopathic doctor gavem L-theanine so that i wouldn't need xanax anymore. It is a little hard to find but you will find it on the net. Take two 100mg pills a day (once in the mornin once in the evening and you might one a third to sleep). It does help you relax but it is not as powerful as xanax and it is not addictive. You can do the breathing and yoga, meditation and add the L-theaning. Also, for EVERYBODY, a lot of research is going on Omega 3 as a possible depression/anxiety help agent. Just in case i take a pill a day, it helps the heart anyway. And remember vitamin b6!

is the doctor your'e seeing a psychiatrist?
no gps i've been to were comfortable prescribing xanax..
it wasn't until i went to a psychiatrist that i was given xanax.
although, not all psychiatrists will.. in general though, they are more comfortable.. b/c my gf's psychiatrist hasn't give her anything really for anxiety.
unfortunately her insurance won't cover the psych i go to.
just a suggestion, try a psychiatrist.
if you are seeing one. ask for something to take as needed.

people see Psychiatrists because they do not want to end up crazy, chances are your GP does not want to prescribe it do to your age.

i don't think she will think that at all... specialists are specialists for a reason.. they specialize in things like the 'mind'... the intestines... heart... etc...
if you're still having problems with the mind, and shes not helping you the way you'd like, its definitely OKAY to go get another opinion.. especially of one who specializes in your kind of problems.
i see a gastroenterologist, as well as a psychiatrist.... my 1st gastro doctor told me to get a 2nd opinion... see... sometimes doctors get baffled and want the opinion of someone else.
don't worry yourself over it.
