I am on 90mg once in morning and once at night. As well as 10mg of oxycodon for BR pain which is not getting rid of the BR pain. These are my Questions.1.Is 90mg a good dose? 2.Should i get a better BR med, like that morphine immediate sulfate thing that i have seen on here? I am the person who posted that im 19yrs and need help, and i do really need help.A lil background again, chronic shingles and just got switched to avinza from the fentanyl patch. I would appreciate all help and experience possible that anyone could offer. thanks again guys.

If the Avinza is not working as much as you think it should, you shoulod discuss it with your doctor. You could ask for MS-Contin instead since it needs to be given every 12 hours.
My doctor gave me immediate release morphine in 10mb tabs for breakthrough back when I first switched to Avinza from Fentany. They are much stronger than Oxycodone, but I was worried about the short acting morphine increasing my tolerance to the long acting morphine (Avinza - which is supposed to last for 24 hours), so I stopped it and went back to Oxycodone.
How does it work given twice daily? If it truely does last for 24 hours, would you, in essence, be on a 180mg dose for the most part?

i am taking MS Contin 60mg every 8 hrs and find it to be decent coverage.i dont think it last 12 hrs,or atleast not at a theraputic level.i can go 12 hrs at night but thats laying down and/or asleep.
i have been offered to switch to kadian 2x a day or avinza 1x day but im hesitant to switch as this is working ok for me now.
the one thing i like about morphine is i do not feel as though im on narcotics as i did w/oxycodone.i have a clear head and it is very smooth at this dosing interval.
i dont think a doc will write avinza 2x a day but maybe switching to one of the other LA morphines at different dosing schedule may be better.then again the dose may be low.
once again i find a big difference in the way morphine works and i do not feel it "kick in" as i did with oxycodone.just decent pain relief.

MS CONTIN is considered a 12 HR med but most docs rx q8
kadian is q12
avinza is q24
thats all the LA morphines
ms contin is the cheapest also but it works well q8

That's one of the reasons I love the Avinza. I don't feel it kick in and it's smooth sailing for the entire time. I also don't seem to have the typical opiate based side effects, aside from constipation, but I'm taking chewable orange flavored fiber tablets to help. The morphine has also decreased the cramping caused by my lactose intolerance, giving me the ability to eat ice cream again - I almost ate a pint of Ben & Jerry's Brownie Batter this afternoon :)
I did ask my doctor about taking Avinza twice a day, but she said she only has a few patients on it and only knows what she has heard from others. She did say Kadian was better 2x a day though.

As other's have said, all contain morphine.
MS-CONTIN: 2x per day, but most need 3x per day
KADIAN: 2x per day, and works well at that schedule
AVINZA: once per day. Rarely prescribed twice per day, but it is possible.
Another difference that is not often mentioned is that AVINZA has an immediate release compondent that the others do not have. 10% of avinza is IR (IMMEDIATE RELEASE).
I've heard rumors that OXYCONTIN also has this IR component. Can anyone verify this?
I'm rx'd Kadian 100 mg twice per day with 30 mg oxy ir (5 mg capsules) for breakthru. I do ok on this. I've come down from twice that dose, so it's difficult to judge. I think I would do better if the breakthru meds were increased a bit. Is there a general rule for figuring out breakthru--as in they should be x% of your long-acting?
