Since then I have not worked out.
This past weekend, I had it. I went to play baseball and when running to a grounder, my stomach was actually stopping me from reaching all the way to the ground!!! I couldn’t believe it. I was so depressed. You get this impression that just because you use to be able to do something before, you can always do it but that is not the case. I decided to weigh myself on Monday 10/31/05 @ 288!!!! I went to the gym and worked out for over an hour and this time I programmed the machine, something I had never done before. Weight age and stuff, according to the system, I lost 731 calories from the elliptical and 375 calories from the treadmill. Went home had some beer, (I know, I know), came in to work and weighed myself early in the morning, like yesterday and I was at 281, no doubt, water weight but water weight or not, I feel a lot better. I probably could have dropped down to under 280 if I ate subway only.
When I hear people talk about weight loss I don’t understand how I can sway so much when they talk as if it is impossible. Anyone have any thoughts? I know it was a lot to read but I wanted to show you how much I have swayed. I am 29 yo male 6’ tall and use to be very active, playing basketball like 3 times a day up until I turned 21 to 22. Any thoughts? I will keep you posted. Maybe the beer was water weight gain/loss fluctuation?

Hi, Mike
Wow...you sure take a lot of notes. You should take my job (court reporter).
What are you eating? If you've yo-yoed like this for so long, I'm sure you know both diet and exercise are crucial. At least for me, one doesn't do the trick without the other.
Beer <sigh> I love it, too. I don't know if this happened to you, but over so many years of drinking the stuff, I developed quite a tolerance and needed more and more to catch a buzz. Then I only liked the taste of the heavy, dark, import stuff. Unless you can limit yourself to one or two light  beers every few days, I just don't see how you can really be successful with weight loss.
There is hope!!! Get into wine instead. Packs quite a punch, dear friend, especially if you're not used to drinking it, and they're finding all sorts of other health benefits with wine.
You can also try a premium vodka (expensive, around 30 bucks a bottle, but you really don't need very much), which also packs quite a punch. If you don't mix it with something sweet, the calories are better than beer.
The first step I made with regard to serious weight loss was getting rid of the beer and soda. My hubby did it with me and wasn't real excited about being a wine person, thought it was not manly  . He loves it now, bought us a rack, a special cork remover, all kinds of gadgets. It took him a few weeks, but he truly loves it now and has become such a pro at tastings and restaurants.
Try a mild red to start out with. If you don't like it, go back and try a fruity white. Your taste for certain flavors will change over time. The sweet wines I drank a year ago, I don't care for as much now. I prefer more crisp and airy flavors. My point being don't give up if you try a hearty cabernet all by itself and don't care for it. Sometimes you just need to find the right type for you at the present time.
Try them with the types of foods they go with, too, which helps when you're starting out, i.e., red wine with steak, white wine with pasta, fish and poultry. Maybe you can scope out your local tastings so you could try a few, usually for free. I have found that owners of wine stores love newbies! They can mold you. My wine guy is like a part of my family now. Don't be afraid to tell them your budget. There are many, many wonderful wines in the $8 to $13 range. Good quality and taste do not always mean more $$$.
Tell us more about your diet, tho, and maybe talk to your liquor store/wine store person to discuss specifically your likes and dislikes. You can often buy small bottles of both liquor and wine to see if you like it before shelling out the big bucks.
Kindest Regards,
Lysne
P.S. I might get some slack about this from my fellow forumites, but stop weighing yourself every day! You're gonna drive yourself nuts :nono: Get committed with a way of eating (if you haven't already), get rid of the stuff you know you shouldn't be eating (and drinking ;) ), get into a regular exercise routine, then get back on the scale weekly.
Sorry...got long

Thanks for the post.
I appreciate the fact that you put a lot of time into it. I actually do have what I ate those days in addition to my weight loss/gain (and what I drank) but I would have been there forever. I have had 2 days off in honor my mother who passed in 03. My diet was no diet at all. I live in Texas and would eat one bbq plate a week. One night would be pizza and wings. Another night would be Chinese food. Then there is Subway night on Thursdays but I think you get the picture. The bad part and where I would go wrong is prolly around 5 nights a week, I would go through between 18 and 19 BL, Including last night. Even after the 19, I can talk to you and you probably couldn’t tell that I have had any, but I can feel it at that point. I promised my wife that I would stop at 30 including cigs because I read somewhere that if you stop at 30, your body can rejuvenate it self as if you never did smoke. I am 2 month away from my 30th. I think I can do it but I don’t know. 18 BL is 1980 calories by it self. I guess I know that I am doing is wrong. This is my way of talking to someone about it. Anyway, that is my diet. Or lack there of.

Hey Mike,
first Off I think the big problem for you probably is the Beer.
As for the The Fluctuations.....
I also weigh myself everyday. It is the only truely accurate way of measuring your weight. Bottom Line is that the Heavier you are the more you can fluctuate from day to day and from morning to night.
Were all your weighings done at the same time of day in the same conditions?
this is important to be accurate.
Right now I am at 242.5, I had peaked at almost 270. so I know the exact feeling you had when you played baseball. I was getting that same feeling trying to tie my shoes or even just wiping my arse.
On a daily Basis I can Vary my weight from morning to night by up to 4-5lbs adn from day to day upto 3-4 lbs.
So if your 288 weight was at night with cloths on, and your 281 was in morning without cloths then it makes perfect sense that you fluctuated up to 8lbs. And since you had a big workout that day....if you didnt drink much water afterwards then you couold have been very dehydrated.

I agree with what is the problem, and I love hearing before and after stories here from other people and no doubt I keep proper records so hopefully you all will be able to read my conformation. I weighed myself at the same time every day. (morning) 8:00 am and the clothing were pretty much the same. I drink water all day and sweat up a storm when working out. I don’t know if I mentioned but on Monday, I had to switch my shirt after the elliptical. Potluck today so I will have to moderate, more importantly is tonight during the Spurs game.
