As ive mentioned i have bad bad year round allergies. My nose stays plugged up all the time, so bad that i cant breathe. So occasionally i use nasal spray. Soon as i spray it in my nose, it burns my nose soooooooooooooo bad! Makes my eyes water and it hurts my nose so bad that i cant stand it. It also makes me sneeze constantly for hours after using it. It also makes my nose run like crazy. I didnt know if this meant that i was allergic to it or what?? Or are these normal side effects of using nasal spray. I there for a while was using it every 15-20 mins my sinuses and allergies were that bad, but they are not that bad now that im on my allergy shots and meds. but occasionally i still have to use it and thats what it does to me. Are these NOT normal side effects or are they normal. Its just the burning that worries me, it hurts and burns very very bad. There for a while everytime i blowed my nose it had blood in it too. But it hasnt done that for a long time.

You were, at one time, usingn it every 15 or 20 minutes? That's too much! Your nose is running because it's breaking up all the congestion, so whatever is there is going to come out. The burning is just a side effect that happens sometimes.

You were over using it. And saline does sting when it reaches irritated nasal tissues. If your tissues are that irritated, you don't have your allergies under control.

Does your nose bleed when you use it say once a day vs. the every 15 or 20 minutes. Nose spray is very harsh on the nose and it should not be frequently or for more than a few days at a time. Most doctors strongly advise against it. You should not use it any more than every 8 - 12 hours too. I also have to use it and have used it for years and sometimes use it more than I should do to the stuffiness even though I know i shouldn't. Have you seen an alergist to see if something like Flonase would help? My doctors for the stuffiness have recommended sudafed (2 of them) every 4 - 6 hours hen I am really bad. The burnig is not abnormal. THe inside of your nose is probably raw from all the doses.

Hope you feel better soon,
Amanda

I had the same problem years ago, what nose spray do you use? I used Dristan. My nose would be stuffed every second of the day and I'd use it at least 10-15 times per day, mostly at night. It gave me little sore bumps inside my nose..and I'd also sneeze at least 2-3 times after spraying. I think it maybe an allergic thing, I was told to stop using the spray and try going without, but I was addicted to it so it was hard at first. The first few nights were uncomfortable, but after that my congestions really improved, and now I never get an allergy or stuffed up nose. I would try going off the nose spray since the ingredients are all chemicals anyway..and maybe the problem will evenyually go away naturally.

OMG you bring up a great point. I wrote my answer assuming it was a saline spray. But if it was a decongestant spray, then yes, over using would make you even more stuffed up.

Have you tried irrigation?

I had great success using a Neti Pot. I bought it at the health food store. I use bottled water (distilled water seemed to be an iratant) and sea salt. The trick is to heat the water to body temp, about 45 seconds in the microwave in a glass measurung cup, then add the sea salt, about 1/4 tsp. Don't forget to do the clearing exercizes they tell you to in the instructions.

My ENT and Nerologist both said it was a good idea.

After a couple of days I noticed a big difference in my nasal symptoms. I used it twice a day and also found that I slept better when I irrigated than the days I forgot. It's awkward at first, but after a while you look forward to it.

I hope it helps

Jack
