soretooth

I had a 'healthy' tooth extracted about 2-1/2 weeks ago. I had a root canal done on that tooth over two years ago, and the tooth broke 3 weeks ago. the break was all the way down to the gum, so I opted to just have it removed. I went thru the dry socket shortly thereafter. Now, there is this white substance that is in the place where my tooth once was. It has been there for a few days, and today it has started to come out. It is a hard white substance, but i was able to break it. there looks to be quite a bit still in this big hole in my mouth. Any clues as to what this stuff is or if I should be concerned?

Thanks for you help,
wishing i had opted for the cap instead

Hi there! Hopefully I can help. {removed} The white pieces you are finding are called "bony fragments" and are probably just pieces of the root that may have been broken before or while the tooth was being extracted, and are now working their way to the surface. This is quite common. You can let them work their way out themselves, or if there is a large piece or it is very bothersome, you should go back to your dentist and have him/her remove it. Sounds like your tooth was pretty brittle, so it's not surprising that you have these bony fragments surfacing now. Good luck!
