I am going to eat onli 20 carbs or under a day...not atkins just low carb. People said this is one of the fastest ways to lose weight and I wanted to know if it's true. Approx how much a week can you lose on this diet. I am not very obese jus ta little overweight. I have tried counting calories but it killed me. So is this just like any other "lose 1 pound a week" diet or is it more? Becuase if it is I will do a much easier diet than this one.

Personally I think It is a Bad thing.
Yes you can lose a lot of weight quickly. But most of it does not come from fat. And no matter what the Low Carb/Atkins people say, it is not good for your health. I am a Type 1 Diabetic and I have met with many Dieticians and Doctors. My edoncrinologist (Bad Spelling I think) is also an expert in weight loss. He is part of a clinic called the Lifestyle Metabolism Center. I have never met any of these docters/Dieticians that think that Low Carb/Atkins is a good thing. They all say to stay away from it.

Sorry, Low Carber coming through. First off let me say that it is not true that all Doctor's say that Low Carb/Atkins or South Beach is bad. In fact my Dad's heart Doctor just told him to go on South Beach. It is also amazing for diabetes. On a low carb forum I visit everyday many praise low carb who are diabetic. Many have been able to either stop their diabetes from progressing or decrease their insulin intake dramatically.
But for the original poster. If you decide to do Low carb for just a quick weight loss, yes you will lose the weight but gain it the minute you stop doing low carb because low carb is not a diet but a permanent change in the way you eat. But actually this could be said for any weight loss program. The minute you start eating the old way that made you gain weight to start with then...well enough said.
Get the books and read. Obviously you have a computer do searches for low carb. There are so many forum with many who live this like I do and can advise you what to eat and what not to eat.
My doctor knows we do low carb and praises us for our efforts. My husband was 280 and now weighs about 190 maybe less. I weighed 160 and now weigh 107. My husband was border line high blood pressure now his blood pressure is perfect. His cholesterol levels are perfect too.

First I'd like to say to Anitak CONGRATULATIONS on both of your tremendous accomplishments. Second I'd like to say that I'm sure you would have received the same results as far as weight loss and bloodwork and bloodpressure if you ate the healthy carbs. There is scientific proof that the low carb diets are a strain on the organs especially the kidneys and the brain. The whole putting your body in a state of ketosis is so damaging. I did the Atkins a while back and have both of his books but unfortunately for me being a person who excercises almost daily it was a killer for my muscles. Most people do not do this diet in a health manner and gain good healthy results from it. I do not eat any unhealthy carbs at all. I do eat whole grains, legumes and fruist and veggies and whole wheat pasta and have lost 2 sizes in 8 weeks. The doc only wanted me to lose 10 lbs but I went a little further with it. This is a way of life for me now..Lisa

Thanks for all of you replies. I did do a lot of research on low carb diets...or so I thought. EVERYONE had something different to say. Some say eat all the cheese, eggs and fish you want because there are no carbs in it. Others said that you're only allowed 4 oz o cheese a day because of hidden carbs (.9 carbs but they can't put .9 carbs on the contents so they write 0 when it really isn't and on this diet EVERY carb counts.) Then some said low carb replacement foods like bread or something was good to have once in a while so you don't get sick of the same foods..others said it's a bad idea to eat those low carb meals at all and to just stick to the natural foods. However, as I have said I am a vegitarian so eating only eggs fish and cheese for the rest of my life doesn't sound too good. lol. I am still going to continue this diet and I will make it a lifestyle change. Its just so confusing on what you can and can't eat because everywhere you go something different is said.
Ps- how long did it take to go from 160 to 107...thats AMAZING!
