View Full Version : Possible Glaucoma - Need Reassurance

I went to my optometrist yesterday for a routine eye exam (never had one before). He took a photograph of my eyes. He said I have larger than average optic nerves, and this may make me more suceptible to glaucoma because the nerve would be more affected by pressure. He said I was likely born this way. Has anyone heard of this before? Does anyone know what my chances of having glaucoma are? He has asked me to come back next week for a more detailed mapping that will actualy count my nerve fibers. I guess I am looking for reassurance about if I have a problem or not, and how serious it could be.

Thanks.

Did he say what your eye pressure was? Does anybody in your family have glaucoma?

My pressure was 22 in both eyes. I had one great-grandfather that had glaucoma, that is the only family history.

I am scared because I am only 31, this seems like a young age to be diagnosed.

I can't answer your questions about large optic nerves, or the odds of developing glaucoma. Normal pressure is up to about 20, so 22 is not too bad (and it varies a bit, like blood pressure).
If the doctor determines that your eye pressure (over several testings) is too high, or there is a risk of damage, he will put you on eye drops to control it. I believe it's fairly easy to manage when caught early.
On the other hand, he might decide the pressure is ok and just want to keep tabs on you.

good luck.
T.
