I plan on fasting 3-5 days and I'm a martial artist / gymnast. My question is, is there a way to prevent muscle loss while on the fast? I'm using Psyllium & Bentonite Shakes for cleansing.

It'll probably help if you do some weightlifting. Good luck!

CRS,
There is no way to prevent muscle loss on a fast. Best you can do is to rest and burn as few calories as possible.
Are you doing the fast for spiritual reasons, or "cleansing?"
It's a dreadful way to lose weight because the rebound is horrific.

Do not excercise at all during the fast. As for losing muscle it takes longer than a 3 day fast to muscle waste..Lisa

So, there won't be any significant loss in Muscle for a 3-5 day fast? Another question, since I'm using Psyllium & Bentonite shakes, how many days roughly should most of the toxins be removed and the healing process begun?

Have you done any other cleanses or colonics? Have you done a liver, kidney, colon and a candida cleanse? They are the staples to a real toxin cleanse. Also infared suanas that make you sweat toxins out. Don't try that on a fast though you will pass out. Wait for the sauna until you are eating the proper nutrients again..Lisa

I have done a Colon, Liver and Parasite cleanse before. My question was will there be any dramatic loss in muscle or not.

CRS,
I have to dasagree with MOXIE on this. There will be CONSIDERABLE protein loss because once you have burned your stockpile of glycogen, the only place your body can get any appreciable source of glucose for the brain is from protein breakdown. Only a teeny amount of glucose is available from fat and the brain DEMANDS glucose.
You WILL lose hard won muscle and you'll lose it fast. By day 3 you will be living on muscle tissue.
It's not long enough for any of the cleansing effects of fasting either. It's a bad idea.

Lenin is correct and I am wrong on this. I really thought it would take more than 3 days to lose muscle but I found this site about fasting and here is what it said:
Many physiological changes occur in the body during fasting. During the first day or so, the body uses its glycogen reserves, the sugars that are the basic energy supply. After these are depleted, the body begins using fat. However, the brain, which has high fuel requirements, still needs glucose (sugars converted from glycogen). To obtain glucose for the brain, the body begins to break down muscle tissue during the second day of the fast. Thus, during fasting some muscle loss will occur. To fuel the brain, the body would need to burn over a pound of muscle a day, but the body has developed another way to create energy that saves important muscle mass. This protein-sparing process is called ketosis, which occurs during the third day of a fast for men and the second day for women. In this highly efficient state, the liver begins converting stored fat and other nonessential tissues into ketones, which can be used by the brain, muscles, and heart as energy. It is at this point in the fast that sensations of hunger generally go away, and many people experience normal or even increased energy levels. Hormone levels and certain functions become more stable in this state as well. The goal of most fasts is to allow the body to reach the ketosis state in order to burn excess fat and unneeded or damaged tissue. Thus, fasts longer than three days are generally recommended as therapy...Lisa

So if I'm reading that article right, there won't be any dramatic muscle loss for a 3 day fast will there? (which I'm currently doing and on the second day)

That is the way it read in my eyes and also woman lose quicker than men. I really don't think you have much to worry about. I was seriously thinking about the 3 day fasting to eliminate toxins but the thought of working my job and not eating I doubt I could get through one day..Do you have anything to drink on the fast?

Well, I use Psyllium + Bentonite Clay shakes mixed /w Orange juice, but all I drink is water, which is key to the success of the cleanse. It is ok to have a piece of fruit or vegetable.

Oh I can definitely do that. I had no idea about the fruit and veggie..thanks, Lisa

Your welcome. Since Fruit and Veggies are highly-digestible, they won't cause the digestive system to work very much at all saving energy for cleansing, as long as you have a extremely small portions like 1 piece of fruit or veg on occasions. And since I don't have a juicer at hand, it's my only alternative.

I don't know if anything is wrong, but since I started fasting and using the Psyllium & Bentonite shakes since monday morning, I haven't had any Bowel movements at all except on monday morning but even then it was very tiny. Should I assume something is wrong or?

The shakes are usually a sign of low blood sugar. This is what I read:
After the digestion of the last meal prior to the fast, the bowels practically cease to function. They take a rest. Dr. Oswald says: "The colon contracts, and the smaller intestines retain all but the most irritating ingesta." Sometimes they will continue to move regularly for the first three or four days of the fast. In rare cases a diarrhea will develop even after fifteen or more days of fasting.

If that is so, what is all the Psyllium Fibre and Bentonite Clay doing? I've been taking at least 20g of Psyllium a day and about 4 Tablespoons in total shakes. Where is it all being stored and when will it be released along with all the toxins? I'm only doing a 3 day fast and today is my last day. Also, is 3 days long enough to eliminate most toxins considering I'ev been taking 3-5 shakes a day?

Oh I misread your post before about the shakes. I thought you said you were getting the shakes so that is why I said low blood sugar..nix that statement but the other statement about the bowel thing is what I read about fasting and not having them until after the fast. It also read that you need to do an enema if after the fast you still did not go. An enema will release all toxins. Honestly before I would ever do an enema I would drink citrate of magnesium..All it is is magnesium..Lisa

I’m not sure why you are doing this fasting cleanse thing but I wanted to tell you there is a great book called “Stop the Inflammation Now” It tells you how to get rid of toxins in your body that cause inflammation of the skin, arteries and everything else. It demands a total diet and lifestyle change. Also another book “Natural Cures they don’t want you to know about” I have not yet done the fasting cleansing and I’m not sure I need to. I believe in colonics but only in the herbal/oral form such as Super Cleanse or natural calm magnesium which is a powder mixed with water that you drink at night before retiring. Also if you are eating conventional foods and not organic then you are doing the fasting cleanse for nothing as they are filled with toxins. If it is a skin thing then you need to get a filter for your shower that eliminates the chlorine and other toxins that are in tap water. My daughter has eczema and she is almost 18 and since this change her skin has improved dramatically. She still eats junk but not as much because all I buy is organic and natural including her ice cream…Lisa

Bentonite Clay + Psyllium together is one of the best ways to cleanse / detox your body and is natural. Thanks for your posts Moxie, but my questions still have not been answered from my previous post. The only thing mentioned that might help is an Enema, but if anyone else has any suggestions, I'd appreciate it. Thanks in advance.
