My daughter has been going to the orthodontist to correct her bite. With no luck he is suggesting surgery. Here TMJ has been so bad her jaw locks open when she gets a cavity filled. They want to break her jaw and put in a plate to extend it out and extend her chin out. She's a teenager and anxious to have this done. I 'm nervous for her and still going through the getting opinions part of this process. Has anyone had this kind of surgery done? I need to know the outcome of this surgery. THANKS

I assume you're referring to Orthognathic surgery. I'm bumping up an informative old post for you. Take your daughter and RUN from whomever is suggesting this surgery for her........

kelsey, im so sorry to hear about your young daughter. My face was sloping badly to one side and from the side it looked like my chin was slping into my neck. I had my jaw broken and a matal plate put in to correct my bite, now my face is not straight from the front and im waiting for bilateral Concept joints. The op was'nt too bad and i had a lot of bruising but could still walk around and i got over it quickly. My bite is ok now(i was biting my cheek as i was chewing).Just to say check that it will make her face straight and ask a lot of questions. I think she is so young to have such an op but i dont know how bad her tmj is. Is she in a lot of pain?.Mabe you could get a second opinion. I wish you and your daughter all the best of luck but do look into it carefully. Judy.
