I am concerned about it because he's been on Fosamax for about six years. He has an infection under a back molar that he's going to take antibiotics for and then next month they will pull the tooth. Has anyone on Fosamax had to have a tooth pulled, and were there any problems? I'm wondering if he should stop taking it until after the tooth is extracted, just in case.

Has he informed his dentist that he is on Fosamax? I urge you to read about a side-effect on page 4 of this thread, "Fosamax Jaw Bone Loss". I developed jaw problems after only 2 weeks of Fosamax, and my dentist wouldn't touch my teeth when I went to him about the problem. He was aware of osteonecrosis as a side-effect. Squirrly

How does anyone get dental care when they are taking Fosamax? Why are dentists refusing to see patients with osteoporosis? A while back I was reading that they refused to see patients with HIV because it was contagious via blood. What's their excuse with refusing patients with low bone density? This isn't right.

I would call the company who makes Fosamax and ask their recommendation regarding necessary dental work. There have been enough reports about possible jaw necrosis problems that some HAVE to have filtered thru back to the company. Unfortunately, few doctors and few patients bother to go to the trouble of filing an Adverse Drug Event.

I would also call your husband's dentist and ask him as well as calling your regular doctor who prescribed the Fosamax. Someone should be able to help you.

Thank you all for your input. My husband has read all your answers and will contact Merck and the dentist on Monday.
