Okay, this might sound like a really really dumb question. What is exactly is a soft food diet? I mean I know what soft food is. But, how does one put this into effect into her daily life. For example, what should be breakfast, lunch, and dinner? I can't imagine myself eating soups and mashed potatoes all day. haha I know what i cant eat at all for example bagels, pretzels, red meats, popcorn...but the question is what CAN I eat? Sheesh, that doc has me paranoid to chew anything at all! Anyone who has any suggestions or who has been on a soft diet that they actually enjoy, let me know.

There are quite a few options really. Of course, don't follow my lead. I couldn't chew for 6 months and decided that ice cream, frosting and peanut butter would sustain me! :) I gained about 10 lbs on this plan. Some good choices are: oatmeal, grits, yogurt, cottage cheese, tuna fish, jello, some flaky fish, and lots of things I can't seem to think of right now. Veggies were the hardest for me. About the only truly non chewing veggie I found was canned asparagus. I love asparagus, but not out of a can. Fruits are easier. Applesauce is good, and bananas, peaches and pears if they're really mushy. And, my favorite, all the ice cream you can eat! Hope this helps.

Rubato,

Well, it depends on your restrictions. I've been on soft food diets where that was okay, and I've been on non chewing diets where it wasn't. After my last surgery, I was on liquid and then no chew. Before the surgery, I was just restricted to things that strained my jaw. So, my long answer is, it just depends. :)

The soft diet depends on how your doctor defines soft. Just ask your doctor to give you some examples of foods that are okay to eat. After my surgeries I too was on a liquid diet and then I usually was on a no chewing diet for about 6 or 8 weeks, so I just lived off of macaroni and cheese. Some other options are scrambled eggs, rice, mash potatoes, really soft, thin bread, and anything else you can get down without really chewing. And one point I was on a soft diet and I was allowed to pinch off pieces of a Mcdonalds cheeseburger and eat it. So, I suggest you ask your doctor for examples. Good luck.

I agree, a soft food diet gets old fast!

When all I could eat were soft foods I got to the point where I would "smash up" some meats like chicken. I would get a thigh (softer than breast) and first cut it in little pieces and then smash the pieces with my fork. That way I got the taste without having to really chew it. I smashed peas and soft cooked carrots too.

crazymomof4- are you off of your soft food diet now? How long did it take you to get off of it. I hear people say they always stay on a soft food diet, and I'm really worried that I might be one of those people who can never eat the same again. That thought brings so much discomfort. I enjoy eating things that I know I cant have.. its such a struggle for me.
