is there anyone out there that knows what's wrong with me? my toenail on my little toe grows upwards not forwards like other nails do, so it's much thicker and when i go to cut it, i have to cut off the top. i've had this since i was born and my dad has it too. this used to be on my other litte toe as well but then i cut it once, perhaps too far in and after a little blood, the nail grew normally. how can i fix this? i tried cutting it like i did with my other toe but it's not working..i don't think it's fungal because i've had this forever and my other nails are fine...please help!!!

In my entire career in the nail industry, I have hardly seen anyone that didn't have this problem with their pinky toes. The nail plate on the pinky is so small, and since it follows the shape of the underlying bone, it will usually "ski-jump" in to the air. since your father has this as well, than you should already know that it is genetic. You cannot change the shape of the nail plate without changing the shape of the underlying bone.

It was probably just a fluke that it straightened out to some degree. One cannot change their genetics.

Daisy- That is so funny! I inherited the same little toe problem from my dad as well!! Mine even fell off when I was 12 and grew back the same "multi-layered, thick as a brick" way! You're not alone! Just paint it a pretty shade and no one will know!
