Hi,
My advice would be to stop before getting preggo. As it maybe harder to stop for you all the sudden. Especially if you are a smoker. This is recommened for all ttcers. Also this is what doctors advise like Mrscarlh said. Good luck to you!

I agree, it is best to stop it altogether. I know that's hard though so the next best advice would be to make sure you are avoiding these substances after O. If you're not charting yet, then you may want to start. That way you will know exactly which days of your cycle are "safe". Again, if you can eliminate it entirely that would be ideal. Alcohol and ciggarettes can mess with your fertility.

Actually the effect of alcohol and fertility should be explained abit better. Occassional drinks are not going to effect your fertility. The cases where it does is for those that are alcoholics and bringe drinks.
Now it can effect your temps when you are charting. It is explained in the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility.
My various drs over the years know I drink a few glasses of wine a week and NONE have told me to stop or that it would effect my fertility.
If drinking truly did effect fertility then my oldest ds shouldnt be here.
As for the smoking yeah that should be stopped because it has been proven it is harder on your boby and baby to quit when you find out you are pregnant.

My doctor told me that is was ok to have some drinks during the the time I know I didn't O yet or around AF. I have also been told that if you had a drink or 2 when pregnant (early on) and didn't know you were, there would be no real cause for concern.

Look at European women most continue to drink their glass of wine with dinner all through their pregnancies. Look at their stats and you know what their rates of FAS or other problems are not high at all even though they drink while pregnant. I'm sure this is going to get me flamed but oh well. I drank with both my pregnancies it was in moderation and my drs knew about it.
As for drinking before you know you are pregnant that is actually ok as well. The first few weeks of pregnancy it is self sustained. I found out I was pregnant 2 weeks before my 21st b-day the month before that was spent with older friends of mine and DH celebrating early. My first appointment I told my dr what had been going on and he explained it all to me that my baby would be fine. The book What To Expect When You Are Expecting actually has some great info about that.

The choice is completely up to you. However I know that the next time I'm trying to convieve I won't be consuming any type of alcoholic beverage. Last year when I turned 21 there was no stopping me from "partying up" my legal age. A week later when I took a pregnancy test since I was late I got the shock of my life when I saw it came back positive. Only then did I realize what I had done the week before. The hell and worry I put myself through is simply not worth it in my eyes. My Dr. really didn't do anything to ease my fears as he told me that I couldn't take back what I did, but now that I know, it's important to stop it all together, which I of course had. But believe me, the worry of what I did that night stayed with me the entire 9 months until he was in my arms and thank god he came out just fine and perfect. However, now I know I won't be doing anything like that when we decide for #2 down the road. But best of luck to you on TTC.
