View Full Version : Too much of a good thing can be a bad thing, or so I’m told

About a month ago, I started to really pick up my routine for taking care of my teeth. I now religiously brush my teeth twice daily (sometimes three), floss, and use Listerine mouthwash morning and night. Now the bottle says right on it “use twice a day,” but my parents stress that using Listerine as much as I do may be doing more harm than good. My mom says her dentist told her that using Listerine a lot could be too much for your gums. How can you tell me this though when on the bottle it says use twice a day! Have any of you heard of something like this? I want to take care or my teeth and gums, not damage them. Thanks!

My mom works for a periodontist and he said that it is very important to use it twice a day and my mom is trying to get all of us to use it twice a day. So from what I know it is god and this is what a periodontist said so it should be right because he is a dentist after all

Hi

My dentist says that it isn't good for your gums. The alcohol in it can burn away the gum tissue as time goes on. Personally, I can understand that only because when I use it that is what it feels like. Maybe don't use it twice a day....remember companies want to sell more of their product so they will tell you to use it a lot more! Kind of like shampoo saying you should wash, rinse, repeat....most people don't need to do that EVERY day! http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif

I would recommend using Act at night.

Goodluck and I would go by what your dentist said.

Have also read that using Listerine too often is bad for your gums...Just my 2 cents. Maybe once a day use a Fluoride rinse (ie. from Colgate) instead.

Very interesting guys. Personally I've never heard anything about Listerine being potentially harmful to your gums, so this is all news to me. I will definitely consider everyone's input. Thanks for all the help!

i have been told by two different dentists that listerine is harmful to your gums. One dentist told me that he wont even tell his patients to use it because of the high levels of alcohol in it. Another dentist told me i could use it but be very careful not to overdo it because it will dry out my gums causing them to peel. I use it once a day and it works fine for me.
