Hello oceanaeyes,
May I welcome you to this wonderful site and hope that you find good support and understanding.
Just a bit of information in layman's terms, not in any way a medical viewpoint.
A shortage of white blood cells is not too good. If you get this you can't defend yourself against infections very well. Minor infections that wouldn't normally affect you much can cause a fever (doctors call this neutropenic fever). It can also lead to blood poisoning, so if your WBC is high at an acceptable level this is ok. The thing to be cautious about though is if it is "abnormally" high or low, then that is when your doctor who is involved in your care would have to look into it. There is a standard measurement that is used to evaluate blood samples, so if it falls well below this or way above it, then this needs looking into.
Also fibro cannot be diagnosed by blood testing. It is usually diagnosed by a tender spot examination and other diagnostic testing - that's a simple way to put it, but this is the way it is diagnosed.
Hope this helps.
Take care

Oceanaeyes, it can't be detected in the bloodwork, but for me that is what I had to go on to get the diagnosis that I have. I originally went to the doctor for huge amounts of fatigue and headaches. He did blood work (cbc) and my white counts were high, my norm is 7.7 and this was 16.5. So we monitored it for a couple of months and than I was sent to a hematologist to run tests like lupus and luekemia. Now I am seeing a rhuematologist. So yes for me my white blood count is high. There is something going on with my body because with the tests that the rhuemy did I am having inflamation throughout my body and my white count goes anywhere from 12.2 to 22. My hemotologist says that fibro can cause your white cells to get higher. What are yours??

My blood cells can sometimes be 2 to 3 times what they should be. my doctor said last time they were at 12000 but they can be up to 22000 as well. we know my body is fighting something but have no idea what. The specialist told me it is indicitive of white blood cell cancer but it would have already shown up since i have been having labs come back like this for the last 5 years now.

I have never heard of white blood cell cancer, I have been having elevated white cells for a year this month. Could be longer but that is when I first felt all of this and we did a cbc on me

that is what he told me.He said i could not have it though or it would have surely shown up by now. Im going to see about finding a doctor here that deals with fibromyalgia. I have read so much info on it lately that much of it just really worries me. If anything i know i need help sleeping at night.

Hello,
My wbc has also been elevated for the last two years. A couple of months ago, I was sent to a hematologist for further blood work. He was worried that I may have leukemia, but after looking at my white cells concluded that they were fine. He did tell me that steroids can elevate the white cells, as I take asthma medications that do contain a small amount of steroid. But he also stated that mine were high even for taking a steroid. He asked that I fax him all my lab work-ups in the future so that he can keep an eye on things. My latest wbc was 17.
