My 16 yr old son who has Cystic Fibrosis has just been diagnosed with diabetes. From the research that I have done, it this is not quite type I or II.

Are there any of you with experience with CFRD? I would greatly appreciate any info you can give me. TIA

I got an email from my mom. I'm deployed half way across the world. Can someone please tell me what this means?

I just got off the phone with Dr. Corley's nurse. She said that at the glucose tolerance test, Danny maxed out at 246 @ 2 hours. Then by the time 3 hours had passed, he was only down to 214. Most people will fall to normal by the end of the test. 140 is normal. That is the reason Dr. Corley is very concerned.

They used to give this test called the Glucose Tolerance test where they have you drink glucose and then test your blood sugar level at certain intervals of time after you drink the stuff.

It shows whether you are diabetic. Danny's highest level was 246 after two hours. That's high. You should be at about 140. After another hour or so, Danny's BG level was at 214. They are concerned because his sugar isn't falling after 2-3 hours.

I say they used to give you that test because I didn't have that when I was diagnosed. They just checked my sugar level and it was high. After that, I tested my own and have hemoglobinA1C tests every three months.

Hope this helps.

Thanks so much for your reply.

I just got another email from my mom and after testing himself for 3 days, the data was faxed to the doctor. He said he's borderline diabetic and won't have him do insulin at this time.

My son is still in denial, so I don't think we would have much luck with getting him to take insulin anyways. Baby steps, right now we just have to get him used to testing himself.

They would probably start him off on oral medication. Even at that high a BG level, I wouldn't want to go straight to insulin either. If he really has to go to insulin, the shots are painless now. He has to stay alive at any rate. There are no compromises with diabetes.

Ask him to try low carb meals, not zero, just low to start out. That might bring his numbers in line.

With his cystic fibrosis they will not alter his diet, he need the calories. His numbers were lower when he did his three day glucose self testing. Still a diabetic, but lower. Dan would rather get his calories from meat anyways.

I can't wait until I get back so I can A) moniter him myself and not have to rely on secondhand information and B) not sleep in a tent anymore LOL
