My name is Joseph. I am 18 years old, and I have been ill for the past 2 months. Allow me to establish a general background. Formerly, I was a high school varsity athlete. I had very high energy, and was always active. I've found that I tend to get stressed out when I am not active in one form or another. This past year however, I have developed breathing problems. Around this time last year, perhaps once every week or two, during fairly intense physical activity, I would find myself wheezing and having great difficulty catching my breath. I chalked it up to being out of shape. However, later in the year, well into the track season when I was in very good athletic shape, I found myself more and more unable to complete workouts. I would find myself gasping for air after a practice lap, which considering my chosen sport and training regimen, was a ridiculous notion. It ultimately hampered my performance a great deal. The problem followed me into the summer, as the wheezing and shortness of breath became quite severe and more and more common place. Up until then, I was only affected when I ran. I began having chest pains, chest tightness, and shortness of breath all the time. I went to an allergist, as the advice I was receiving suggested I do so. Despite all tests I was given, the results showed me to be normal, if not very healthy. Regardless, the de facto prognosis was asthma. I was put on albuterol to use when I ran, and Advair to take twice daily. Neither seemed to nullify the symptoms, though they were lessened slightly.
I only mentioned all this because it may or may not have anything to do with my present illness. Starting a little over two months ago, I came down with what I thought was just a passing cold. The symptoms, which have persisted to the present day include: Lethargy, extreme fatigue, lightheadedness, headache, dizziness, difficulty concentrating, flemy cough, migraines, difficulty sleeping, and on this on top of all the asthma stuff. Although the severity of the symptoms vary day to day, I haven’t had a single day when I’ve felt “good”. It tends to follow a pattern of feeling marginally better for a few days, then steep drop and a very rough day or two. Needless to say, the impact on my lifestyle is immeasurable. A “comprehensive metabolic panel” taken showed nothing abnormal. This doctor seemed eager to get rid of me, so I went to an internist. A lung x ray tuned out normal. A second, broader, blood and urine analysis showed everything to be normal. I don’t have mono, or an acute infection of some sort. I was then tested for Addison’s, which luckily turned out negative. Although the internist seemed very thorough, he eventually ran out of ideas.
I have no history of depression, and I was rather excited with the prospect of college and leaving home up to actual move. So I doubt that any sort of depression caused this symptoms.
So here I stand, my first months of college characterized by poor health. I've seen a general practioner and an internist; I'm left with not greater insight into the cause or cure of this illness. Before I see another doctor, I am turning to the internet, and its collective knowledge to give me some idea, some lead to investigate that might shed some light on the subject. I turn to you, members of the forum to give me any insight you can.

Since you are just starting college, and your health has worsened since starting college, could you be allergic to something? Like, are you in a dorm room? with a roommate? Or, perhaps the classrooms themselves are causing an alergic reaction.
When you say that you have a few days of feeling better, are you away from a specific area (i.e. room or classroom) for the weekend, and your sypmtoms decrease?
I am so sorry you are feeling this way. Did you say if you'd had an MRI yet?

I was sick a week before I actually left home for college. And the asthma stuff started months before. I live in an apartment on campus. I have a roommate and there are three other guys that live in the suites. I haven't seen a pattern with where I am, and how I feel. I'm usually in the same places, whether its a good day or not. How I feel tends seems to correlate with how I sleep. Despite the fact that I'm exhausted all the time, I have trouble getting to sleep and sleeping well for that matter. So I don't actually have any good nights sleep. I haven't had an MRI. That is something I am considering pushing for if I see another doctor.

I had a similar illness that lasted months with all the symptoms (except the respiratory ones) you describe and it turned out to be an HHV-6 viral infection (closely related to mono, but different). You could very well have a viral illness like CMV, or some other viral syndrome going on.

As I understand it, the tests showed that there was no "acute infections", so I assume the precludes a viral infection.

Hi Curly Joe. I think tick-borne illnesses may be a possibility. Lyme disease is a multi-system bacterial infecion caused from the bite of an infected tick. Many people are bitten by ticks without knowing it. They are tiny and inject a numbing agent so you cannot feel them on you.
Besides Lyme disease, ticks can transmit several co-infections including Babesiosis, Ehrlichiosis (HME & HGE), Bartonella, and Mycoplasma. Many people who have Lyme are co-infected. It is important to be tested by a Lyme reputable lab such as IgeneX in Palo Alto, CA. The co-infections Babesiosis and Mycoplasma can cause shortness of breath and heart/chest symptoms.
When these diseases are a possibility, it is very important to see a knowledgeable doctor. Many doctors do not understand Lyme and treat with outdated protocols. No Lyme test is completely reliable. Even though Lyme disease is the second fastest growing infectious disease in the US after AIDS, many in the medical community are unaware of its seriousness and prevalence. If you post where you are located, I wil tell you of the closest knowledgeable doctor to you that I know of. For more information on Lyme disease, see the Lyme disease board at this site.
Don't give up, you will find out what is wrong.

This unfortunately sounds a great deal like what I went through 10 years ago....and, again unfortunately, you will find that all your medical tests will come back normal. Have you considered the possibility that it is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome? I tell doctors at this point "I am the most healthy, every-medical-test-comes-back-normal-but-feel-like-crud-all-the-time person you will ever meet." I feel like a freak of nature....But, you could very well have CFS. Look it up and do the research. What I found for myself is that if that was indeed what I had, I only had a mild dose of it. I did, as a teenager, contract mono and I don't think it was eradicated...I think the virus went underground and continues to show up in my life in different ways (I'm dealing with something unusual now in which every test I do comes back normal, but I still feel ill). By the way, a virus isn't going to show on any tests, and the only thing I have found that doctors recommend for a virus is rest and ibuprofen/aspirin.

 HI CURLY, All of the symptoms you described, dizziness, lightheadedness, tighness in chest, diruption in sleep etc., are all signs of panic disorder. I sufffer from this and at times think i am dying. I also have asthma and meds such as albuterol really have affect on panic disorder. I am no doctor, but just see a simularity in our symptoms , Hope this helps :)

Hi Joseph. There is an excellent Lyme doctor who has offices in Palo Alto, Nevada City, Malibu, and Long Beach. His name is Dr. Steven Harris. I hope you can see him soon for an evaluation.
I really think this is worth checking into. Lyme and co-infections can cause the symptoms you describe and they can wax and wane like you describe.
Good luck. Please let us know how you are doing and keep us posted on your progress okay?

lots of things come to mind. if you had not said you had been to an allergist i would have said it was allergies (my mold allergy excellerates my asthma this time of year and in late summer), they did test you with the skin test right? Other things such as fibromyalgia (although usually a woman's disease it is not always), chronic fatique and/or lyme disease did come to mind as well.
hope you find out what it is soon!
best wishes,
Amanda

I saw my doctor today, to update him to my health and bring up the recommendations you people have made. The panic disorder was the only one that interested him. He was considering it himself. He recommended I see a psychologist or psychiatrist to see if the source of my illness is anxiety related before we jump into finding out if I have chronic fatigue syndrome, which he said was hard to pin down anyhow. But I haven't made any further progress; apart from my cough getting more severe. During the winter break my mom plans to send me to a specialist of some sort.
By the way, I appreciate the input by all you folks. At least i still have leads to consider.

It sounds like it could be Environmental Illness also called Multiple Chemical Sensitivity which is what I have. It all started after I was pesticide poisoned.
Do some research online on Environmental Illness and see if it sounds like y ou. If you think so - look for a doctor who is a Environmental Illness specialist. If I am around perfume, fabric softener, pesticides, gasoline etc my throat starts closing up, my legs get week, my face red, etc etc etc.

Update: I went to a heart doctor. Although I was ruled to be perfectly healthy, he did confer with a virologist. I was referred to this virologist. After another battery of tests including a throat culture and a sputum sample, he told me I have a staff infection in my sputum and put me on antibiotics. However, the doctor is not positive this has caused all my symptoms. I have yet to see any results so far, but it hasn't been long.
