I really need some help as I have been to 3 doctors, (2 internal medicine, 1 ENT), and my dentist, and none of them know what is going on in my mouth.
Over the last year I have developed severe whitish/yellow coated tongue which will not go away no matter what I try, and it always feels very dry and sandy in the back. I've tried several products for intibacterial spraying, brushing, scraping, etc. and it is only reduced a little bit, but comes right back. I drink plenty of fluids, and do not think it's from dehydration.
And now in addition to that, I have developed tiny bumps all over the rear ROOF of my mouth that will not go away, and the whole thing feels like I have sand in the back of my mouth.
The doctors all say, "hmmm, could be geographic tongue, but I'm not sure", and the dentist says "I have no idea, better go see your doctor".
I know there is something wrong with me as I have never had anything like this in my whole life until about a year ago right after I had a strange bout of gasteroenteritis, in which I had to go to the ER. Ever since then I have never been quite the same with my digestion, and started developing these problems about two months after that.
I am at a loss, and am sick of paying so many medical bills only to find out that doctors have no interest in doing investigative medicine. Does anyone have a clue as to what my problem might be???? It's starting to make me insane!! Thanks for any help you can give..

Did any of the Drs say anything about thrush? Its a candida yeast overgrowth. Try eating some yogurt or get a good probotic. A yeast overgrowth can also cause digestive problems.

Thanks for your response..
No of course none of them said anything about that. They said it didn't seem like a fungal infection.
Could a yeast overgrowth also cause the bumpy, sandy feeling on tongue and roof of mouth?

sounds like thrush.....try acidophillus from the health food store....only purchase the kind that you have to keep in the fridge. Also, you could try the new Dannon Immuno drink.....tastes great and it helps the immune system and because it is yogurt based will probably help your issue as well. The drink comes in a pack of four 2 oz drink bottles. Drink one a day...maybe two if you issue is bad.......see if this helps.

It's weird that I have now had this for over a year. Can something like a yeast infection last that long?
I also notice that it gets much worse covering my entire tongue, when I am stressed or tired. Not sure what to do, but maybe I will try some of your suggestions. I don't understand why none of the doctors would take a sample or try to figure out what it might be. I'm not a doctor, how am I supposed to diagnose this?
It's disturbing also to see that sometimes this can be related to diabetes, or even HIV. I certainly hope it's none of those!

Yes, yeast can last that long and longer if conditions are right.
Here are some of the oral meds used to treat oral yeast. Believe you will need a prescription for all of them. Ask your doctor, and give it a try.
nystatin (eg Nystan oral suspension)
amphotericin (eg Fungilin lozenges) or miconazole (eg Daktarin oral gel)
I know that Nystatin cream for yeast on the skin works very well.

yes...it is VERY possible for what you have to last a year or more! if it is yeast/candida then you have to be very determined to look at your diet. There is a very good book out there devoted to candida....but, I want to forewarn you that dealing with your diet in regards to candida is a very complex issue and you have to be very diligent and do EVERYTHING that is necessary for you to fix it. You will probably find that almost everything you eat is on the list of things NOT to eat....if you have a Vitamin Shoppe store near you go there. They have a fabulous research area which not only includes books you can check out but also includes use of their computers to do research online. By the way, did you research your medications that you are taking for your asthma? Check side effects...maybe this is causing the thrush? Did you ask the allergist/doctor about the medication causing this? I know for women taking antibiotics can cause vaginal yeast infections....check your meds...you can also go to rxlist.com to get info about meds.
hope I helped a bit......ask questions if you need more help/suggestions.....

I'm diabetic and have had thrush several times. The first time my doc told me what was wrong I thought he was crazy- only babies get that. But turns out it's pretty common with (as stated before) diabetes, AIDS/ HIV, and different side effects of meds.
I've found that the best thing is the Nystatan oral suspension and a dose of Dyflucan. I've have had it so bad that I had to take the Dyflucan for 4 days. Point being, don't give up. If it seems like it doesn't want to budge try a more frequent dosage. Good luck!

I am /was in the same position as you but mine has got a lot better. The tongue is a reflection of your digestive system, in fact each specific part of the tongue reflects the condition of small intestine, large intestine, liver etc. The reason why the tongue is coated is because this is to do with bad bacteria and poor digestion in your stomach and the reason why the actual tongue becomes physically coated is to do with the permeability of membranes or something. The small blobs on your tongue are fat deposits.
What you need to do is refine your diet. Cut down on sugar, refined carbs and fatty fried foods. Increase your fibre intake and maybe cleanse your colon through an appropriate method. Drinking pau d'arco tea will also help. Once your digestive system is in tact flood it with acidiphollus , good bacteria. One way of sorting your system out is to fast - this will help sort your tongue out no end. This is all provided you have already tried an anti fungal such as nystatin. From the sounds of it it seems like a digestive issue so do the above and see the results.
