For the past month I have been getting headaches at night that are more on the pressure side and I noticed my left eye is not as clear as the other. Also, my tooth started to hurt so I went to the dentist and he thinks it all could be from TMJ. He is making me an appliance to wear at night and I was wondering if anyone knows what this is or is it easy to deal with? I was supposed to go to a neurologist today but my dentist wants me to wait on that. He had a patient who went through all of these tests at a hospital and it ended up being TMJ. I figured I would post here since you all probably have experienced something like this.

Hi:
It sounds possible that your problem is TMJ. It's amazing all the things that TMJ can cause. I'm guessing that your dentist is going to make you a splint. You might want to do some research on the internet and on this website on splints. You can find alot of good informaiton. Did he say whether he was making an upper or lower splint? Did he mention what type of splint? Has he done any testing, X-rays or MRI? The more informed you are as a patient the better off you will be. Feel free to ask additional questions. I would be more than happy to answer anything I can.

At the dentist he took an impression of my lower teeth. He also took Xrays of teeth and the muscles/joints. All he told me was, he is going to make me an appliance that I will use at night. I will look up the splint though. Thanks a lot for your help. Does anyone have any suggestions for the headaches and jawaches? One more question, I notice sometimes when I open my jaw I hear this noice in my ear, it is hard to explain but it sounds like a hinge or something opening and closing. It's weird. I can't explain the sound. Is that a normal TMJ symtpom?

Yes, the noise often happens with TMJ. A kind of clicking or popping sound. Have you been experiencing pain? If you could call your dentist and find out the name of the appliance he is going to make you could do research on the internet so you have an understanding before you receive it. One thing you should know is that when dealing with TMJ you really need to be seen by someone who is experienced in TMJ. It's a very intricate, delicate joint and not just any dentist is trained to treat it properly and being treated improperly can make the problem much worse. I think the first place to start is to find out what the name of the appliance is so you can research that. Also, how much is he charging you for this appliance? Please feel free to continue to ask questions that you have. I know how hard it is when first starting out.

Thanks again for answering me. I have a question. Can TMJ cause pressure on your temple? On the left side of my head, mostly at night I get pressure in my head. Not hurting or whatever but it's annoying and when I look it up online it comes up as brain tumor so I made myself all paranoid. Does TMJ do this?

thanks for answering. tomorrow i am going to pick up the appliance the dentist made for me. hopefully this works. i am so worried though because of all the brain tumor information on the internet that is related to headaches. anyways, another question i have is for the past 2 days i got hte pressure in the morning and then again in the afternoon adn at night, is that normal? with the pressure i also feel it in my cheek like some kind of feeling. also, i notice that my teeth are always on top fo eachother and sometimes they feel very tight and stiff. is that normal to?

It sounds to me like you may be clenching your teeth without even knowing you are doing it the pain in the morning could be from nightime clenching. I do this myself aand then i realise im doing it stress makes me do it my teeth always feel sore my jaw is always tight and so is my face feels like i have a mask on some days do thiis clench your teeth together and i bet you feel the pain you have in your temples i get a lot of pain by my joint and it just spreds out everywere else i also have it on both sides, I suffered with what i thought was terrable sinus headaches for around 4 years due to nightime clenching they would last up to a week and i stayed in bed for days they were pounding before i had any other symptoms my jaw would also lock on me then wham all this other stuff the cheek muscle and neck muscles on the right are bigger than the left i belive my problems started when i was pregnant with my second child i had a tooth removed it was the second back molar on the left side then i left it and my big molar on the left fell over because there was nothing suporting it and my teeth on that side would no longer fit together so i could not chew that side then all the headaches started you know the rest

Miss L ps hope you find some relief and pray i do i have 3 appointments in january regular oral surgeon prothodontic doctor and an ent doctor wish me luck

im sorry i have so many questions but im just so paranoid and new to all of this. my few questions are:
1. before i had the splint i had the temple pressure everyday at night and in the morning. now its not as bad because i have had the splint for a week? is this normal to TMJ?
2. also on the left side of my jaw where all my symptoms are the bone feels like it sticks out really far when i open my jaw...more than the right side that is not as painful. is this TMJ or is that how the jaw is supposed to be?

if anyone can answer these id really appreciate it..

thanks

Hello,

I agree with Miss L it sounds like you are clentching without knowing you are doing it. Have you tried the exercise where you press the tip of your tounge to the roof of your mouth while you are awake? Like while you are on the computer ect.? It is very hard to clench in that position.
(1) it sounds like your splint is working for you. It it taking some of the pressure off.
(2) you should ask your Oral Surgeon to have an MRI done if you have not had one already.
If you had dislocated something in your jaw, you would know it! Everything that you have wrote in your post just sounds like you have TMJ. Calm down and stop freaking yourself out. It will be okay! :)

Hi IMB723,
I also thought I had a brain tumor, meiere's disease, fibromyalgia etc, etc. I was a mess. and the stress made it worse! To be on the safe side, I had every MRI, Cat scan, test, etc to make sure my brain was normal.
I wear a Mora splint now, I started having relief from symptoms after about 3 weeks.
I also, clench, which means, the splint is not a cure. It just helps us control the TMJ. When I"m really stressed I still have pain and dizziness. But It's definitley not as bad.
There's hope, so hang in there!

thanks all of you so much. i went to the my dentist today and he said it looks like i am making progress. we are going to see how i am over the next week or so with the splint. he says there is some inflammation and that is why i am getting the soreness in my head. after a week or two he might put me on Mobic which is an anti inflammatory and also he might shave my splint so it is more suitable. I told him where it hurts and everything and he says it is in a good spot so he knows where everything is. Thanks to all of you again. Now that I heard it from you people and my dentist I am going to try and stop worrying about a brain tumor. I think my dentist who is a professional doctor would have told met ogo somewhere else if he thought it was something else. Thanks to all of you again.

Question: For those of you who had been suffering with TMJ. I have the splint and the headaches are getting better, I do not get them in the morning just sometimes in the afternoon and/or night. Did any of you get the temporal headaches everyday? I feel it from my ear and then it moves to my temple. I am still worried abotu teh whole brain tumor idea - too much info on the internet.

If you're really that worried you need to express tthat to your Dr. He can schedule you for an MRI to ease your mind.
I get headaches every day.

lmb723..I am doing a TMJ board search right now on headaches. Sometimes mine feels like sinus headaches, other times it is in the temples. Tonite, it feels like a sharp pain, on the right side of my head. Most of my symptoms are on the rt. It doesn't last long at all, and it isn't VERY painful. I get paranoid about tumors and all that stuff. I was going to post myself to see if this type of headache is normal. If anyone wants to answer....Dealing with TMJ bites, and mine isn't half as bad as some I have read on this board. Take care.

I get the sinus headaches too. That is why I am going to an ENT this thursday for another opinion. I get headaches more on the pressure side. Either in the left temple, back of the head or sinus locations.
