Hi

It is 4 days to go until my root canal and i am a nervous wreck already. I am going to try and have this done just with the valium taken orally because the dentist wouldn't give me the iv sedation last time because i had taken the valium and i can't cope without taking it before i go. I just can't believe how my teeth are affecting my whole life, i am 32 and sometimes i wish i was alot older just so my wouldn't appear so bad for my age. I just don't seem to think of anything else and my mood with my family is terrible. Does anyone else here spend most of the day worrying about their teeth? i would love to hear that i am not the only one.

dear maz
when i was waiting for a bunch of work to be done on my teeth,(4 wisdom teeth extracted, some reconstruction done.) i was a nervous wreck! i obsessed, i drove my husband crazy!
i could not sleep with the pain, i let them get worse with putting it off, i cried, and cried. the thing is, although actually going through with it was horrible, it is now OVER!! i dont think about them unless i am brushing them and i like what i see when i look in the mirror. the only thing to do is bite the bullet,(ha ha) and do it. you will be a different person, a happier person, when its finally over. good luck!

I am the same way. But usually the anticipation and anxiety is much worse than the procedure. Just try to relax and it will be over with before you know it.
Good luck!

I had 2 root canals done at separate times and having the work done was not that bad. See if they will give you gas, it will at make you relax when you are in the chair.

Good Luck

Thanks everyone, i have managed to survive another night and i am now counting the hours, i wouldn't mind if i was going in to hospital for an operation or something, i have had my fair share of medical problems and that doesn't bother me at all, but mention the D word and off i go in to a panic . I had a root canal done nearly 3 years ago (the one awaiting extraction) and it was a horrible experience and even though i could feel some pain during procedure the dentist just kept telling me to lie still. I guess the last one was more difficult to do because it was such a big tooth with multiple roots , this one is a pre molar so it might stand a better chance. I am just so scared of losing my teeth as i have had so many problems with them in the last 2 years, i know there are people worse off than me and there is one lady who visits these boards who is facing full dentures at an early age, my hat goes off to this lady for being so brave and getting on with things. Anyway thanks for letting me vent and if there is anyone out there who has had success with root canal work please get in touch.

Thanks Zahn,I did it! and i can't believe it. Everything went quite well apart from the tooth was also more decayed than the dentist thought so i have to have a crown pretty soon. I was crying my eyes out when i arrived but they were really nice and soon had me sat in the chair with nitrous oxide and headphones playing classical music which really helped. The actual treatment was painless and i can't believe i spent the time he was drilling my tooth admiring the patterens on the ceiling without a care in the world. I don't feel too good now though as the pain is really setting in despite the painkillers i have taken. The dentist said it is best to leave the tempory filling on for around a year in case he has to go back in and retreat it and it would mean drilling right through a crown. Does anyone have any experience of this? and will my tooth hold out without breaking?. I have had a root canal before but the crown was placed straight after. Today cost me alot of money but i was treated very well and felt relaxed. I might need another root canal next month on the ajacent tooth and this is what upsets me the most because prior to last september both thesebteeth were totally unfilled and proclaimed sound by my last dentist, good news is he has agreed to pay towards my current treatment at the new dentist. Thats it for now as i can't type properly whilst holding my face. Thanks again for your support.

I just had a root canal a couple weeks ago and he drilled right through the crown. It saved me a lot of money (no new crown) and I've been to the dentist so much there was no pain, except after I left the office. He said my mouth might be sore because I had to take antibiotics before he did the root canal because of an abscess. Two weeks later I went back for the final filling and all is well. M.J.

Dear Maz...I noticed that you are in the UK. I've been reading lately about ozone therapy that many dentists are using in your 'neck of the woods'. Maybe you should research this before you have the 2nd root canal and maybe, just maybe, the ozone therapy would negate the necessity of having a 2nd root canal. Also, I've read much lately about microcurrent therapy and wonder if that might help too. It speeds up healing and a couple of people posted on the internet about the microcurrent therapy healing abscessed teeth. Just a thought to try and help. God bless you!

I recently had a root canal that went remarkably well too. My end told me to have the crown within a month.

Previously, I had asked my first dentist how long after a root canal before the crown and he said a year. When I asked my new dentist, he said that it could be as soon as a month, but that he defers to the endo. Whatever the endo says, he does. So maybe it varies from endo to endo or from tooth to tooth. Maybe all that decay makes him want to wait.

Did you have this done by a dentist or endo? The dentist who told me a year was going to actually be the one doing the root canal. But I ended up deciding to go to an endodontist to get it done. Maybe dentists are more likely to have to go back in and retreat, so they wait it out? My endo didn't even do a temporary filling. He just sealed it up, told me not to chew on that side, and sent me off for my crown.
