I have no idea where on earth we got it from as none of our friends has it and we homeschool. Any way, my dd has lice. She's the only one in the family.
We've tried the medicated shampoo and a bunch of other things. I've vaccumed and washed everything till it's almost all falling apart. I'm going crazy. Any ideas?

we had a MAJOR bout with it.... MAJOR MAJOR..... keep shampooing... make sure you use HOT HOT water when you wash everything... get the spray (with the lice shampoo) and spray matresses, headboards, sofas, ANYWHERE her hair might have been. ... clothing... toys... blankets.... literally EVERYTHING....
it's time consuming.... but make sure you go over it again in a few weeks b/c of any missed eggs.... and then I'd do it AGAIN in a few weeks after THAT......
vac****** after the spray is done and set in.... good luck... i KNOW how bad it can get.

Not only is it time consuming, it is expensive!! If she still has it, you can also ask the doc for a script for shampoo. I have never used it, but I heard it works great. Along with everything thing else that LilEeyore has said! That spray gets pretty pricey when you have to do everything.
Goodluck!

I'm going through the same thing right now. I've been babysitting my niece and nephew and they just moved in right below us(we have a small efficiency downstairs, so they are renting), well, low and behold, my daughter, my husband and I contacted lice!!! I was FREEKIN!! I mean freekin!!!!! :dizzy: I'm really busy with the kids and school that handling this issue is such a HUGE hassel! Firstly, I went and bought that RID product (dangerous pesticide, but I panicked and wanted to kill those buggers) used it on all of us, and your supposed to reapply within 10 days because you may not get all of those eggs the first time and it takes 7 to 10 days for those gross things to hatch!!! So I repeated the treatment and thought okay this is over. Well my husband checked my neice's hair and found MORE. Mind you i'm very clean and so are they, and it doesn't matter about weather or not your rich or poor, they like CLEAN heads and by the way, they hate hairspray but we will get to that in a bit! So I said, alright that's it, I'm on a MISSION. I went to wallmart and came accross this little device called the "ROMBI COMB." :) It's and electrical device that makes a buzzing noice, and it's a tooth comb that is supposed to be used to comb the affected person's hair and when lice is found, the sucker KILLS it instantly and you know it worked only if the buzzing sound STOPS!! :D :D I found FIVE little bugs in my daugher's hair but none in mine which confused me. BUt I figured it out that they hate hair products and i use this loreal stuff called Pumping curls and I think they hate that. ALthough after the very first treatment with the RID, I did see 2 bugs floating in the tub, YUUUUUUUUK!!!! THere were about 8 in my daughers. Anyhow, in the meantime you have to wash all worn clothing, sheets, pillow cases, disinfect your brushes, combs, pony tail holders in alcohol(you can wash the pony tail holders), and wash EVERYTHING that goes near the affected person's head. Vaccuum, bla bla bla. THe good thing about this comb though is once the eggs have hatched, this thing kills the babies and they can't lay eggs for a few days so if you get THEM, you stop the whole cycle with persistence with this comb. I've read for 6 hours on the net about all this stuff after I bought the comb and couldn't tell you how many times that I read that people were absolutely diligent in trying to pick out the nits but they KEPT COMING BACK. I also read about other things you can do that have been successful for others that you may want to do in conjunction with this comb. I AM!
1. TEA TREE OIL shamp and conditioner(lice hates this stuff), I got the paul mitchell kind, but any will work.
2. DENOREX EXTRA STRENGTH(make sure that it's extra strength) the coal tar in it KILLS THEM INSTANTLY and I read many success stories just about using this only, like every other day and combing with a nit tooth comb to try to get the eggs out which really seem impossible.
3. GARLIC: THey hate garlic!
4. They also hate hair spray
You could try either the denorex ES and a good comb, or the robi electrical comb and I'll bet you succeed. The tea tree oil is a great preventative measure and will help, i've read that THAT itself worked, and I also read that that ITSELF didn't, but it's good to use once or twice a week when this is all over because it will PREVENT. Garlic in itself has worked for some too. I'll let you know but I haven't found one since I used that comb on my daughter's hair the other day...I think cause i've been using the denorex ES and the tree oil shamp on alternative days with the nit comb, AND the electric comb. These things are A PAIN in the butt!!!
P.S. The robi comb is 22$ at wallmart, BUT, if you think about it, you'll spend way more throught this whole process on those products that don't work!

they do get used to stuff really easily though which is the sad thing... so if you have them reoccuring.. switch to something else.

I wont get into it, but think about putting pesticides on your kids heads!!!!!
Do some research, and then look for alternatives.
Ok, gotta get into it a bit. I cannot believe that with a bunch of dedicated, educated parents like yourselves that pesticides are still an option. Please, I am begging you all, to think about the effects of pesticides on our childrens heads!

You've gotten great advice. One more thing to add ... the plastic combs that come w/ the kits are pretty much useless .... invest in a metal nit comb ... sold separately in the same area of the store as the shampoo, etc.

I think we have it licked! We've been using the conditioner every day and leaving it on a couple hours. It seems to have done the trick finally. I'm sure praying it never, EVER comes back.

Keep checking daily, if you spot an egg, pull out the hair its attached to.
they don't like hair spray, mousse, gel, anything that makes the hair a little sticky as their leggs get caught.
Sorry but its a myth that they live in carpets and bedding, they are animal fleas, which is different to head lice. Head lice feed on the blood of the scalp, they need a constant supply or they die.

On the (Toronto) news this week there was a story about a doctor (Dr. Dave Pearlman) who found a cure for lice. Here it is:
Buy a big bottle of Cetaphil - the stuff you usually use to wash your face. Take a huge glob and saturate the hair with it. Then, blow dry the hair until the cetaphil dries. I don't recall but I beleive you have to keep it on for a while before washing it out (at least a couple of hours) and I think this has to be repeated once a week. Search the internet since I don't remember the details too much. I guess it works by suffocating the lice. Safe and no chemicals! There is some controversy surrounding the doctor and his methods but its only cetaphil. If its safe for our faces, its safe for our scalps.

Hey there,
My daughter also had lice for a long time, I tried EVERYTHING possible, most of the hair product, the electric comb thing that kills the things and i went so far as to puting a swimming hat thing over her head so that the monsters couldn't breathe. She hated them more than ever, she hated seeing them, it got so bad that it was infested and i tried endlessly to get them out but nothing worked. There were loads in the bath when she washed her hair, and everytime she went to bed, you would see lice on the pillows and some on the blankets everyday. It was a nightmare! Untill i came to a simple soloution, cutting her hair. She didn't like it one bit because it was so infested that we had to cut her hair and she did look a little bit like a boy :o But the kids at school didnt even pick on her, they were a bit surprised (im a helper in the classroom so i should know) but they got used to it. Now her hair is growing and she looks more like a girl now. Its probably not too infested so try the hair stuff and the electric comb and everything you can before you go cutting her hair, girls hate that for sure.
