I have a few questions.

I have IBS,and I went to the doc for pain in my stomach. He said I had constipation. So I took 2...10 fl oz bottles of mag citrate and went, then the next day I couldnt go again. So I went back to the doc he told me to take another bottle of the mag citrate. So I ended up drinking a total of 30 fl oz of mag citrate. After the 3rd bottle I went n couldnt go the next day. So I went back again and I got put on Senna(laxative) for a few days and Metamucil and Im still not going!

Anyone know why none of things worked, and why I still cant go, or any other ideas would be great too.

Thanks

When I was 1st having stomach/constipation issues I had to drink the mag citrate stuff, only 1 bottle though. After that still no luck and I went in for more tests and was diagnosed with IBS. I am now using Zelnorm and even though I am still having problems at least I go to the bathroom a few times a week. The doc tried me on fiber drinks and other laxatives and NOTHING helped the movement. I would go to a gastro doc and see if something else may work for you. It is not very healthy to rely on laxatives to use the bathroom. I changed up my diet a bit and that seemed to help out as well.

Good Luck and I hope things start working for you again!!

I'll start by telling you I'm a total idiot! I somehow just posted a quote of your post! I have no idea how but, now I find myself having to edit to post you my thoughts...

Mag citrate and senna are NOT a good fix for IBS. Your colon can become dependent on them. Senna is natural but it's still a very powerful laxatives. You need to see a gastro doc. Not only because they have better solutions for you if it is IBS but, to have some tests run to make sure that's what it is! IBS can be mimiced by some other much more serious diseases.

As to the "drinks", You may have to try several different kinds until you find one that works for you. And doc's don't tell you you have to start slow and work your way up. Start with a teaspoon a day and add to it. I have to take 4 heeping tablespoons of citrucel a day. Metamucel dosen't work for me at all. It just gives me gas. They also forget to tell you that they work by bulking up when they draw water from your system so for them to work properly you have to drink ALLOT of water with them and through the day. Extra water by itself helps with C too. Be patient with these. They do help to varying degrees. You just have to be patient (I know it's hard when your C).

I hope this helps some.

Love,

Jamie

I read the results of a study not too long ago (it was on Medscape) where they concluded that laxatives really don't help with IBS-C. In fact they can often make things worse by creating lots of gas above the blockage. Frankly, I wouldn't worry about getting dependent on artificial aids if you have serious IBS-C. A few years ago I gave up and now when I get seriously constipated I take a tap water enema. I think that the acceptance of this approach actually lessened my symptoms, since it removed a lot of the anxieties associated with the problem. This business of laxative/enema dependence is blown way out of proportion for people who suffer with this affliction.
