View Full Version : Scar on retina, I am scared

Hi,
any advice or information would be greatly appreciated as I am freaking out!!!
I went recently for a routine eye check as I wear glasses/contacts and my optomertrist saw a scar on my retina. I wasn't worried at the time because I thought it was the same thing an eye specialist saw 7 years ago, however my optomertrist got the old record and apparently this scar is different.
It doesn't affect my vision, but I am worried what caused it may happen again, I can't see the eye specialist for two weeks and I am really worried.
Has any one else has a scar on their retina?

thanks

Is the scar inside your eye on the retina or on the front of your eye on the cornea? I have a scar on my eye from either an eye infection or contact lense wear. I don't know for sure what caused it, but it's been there for a while.

thanks for your reply Missy
the scar is on my retina, but on the periphery so it doesn't affect my vision, if it was in the centre of my retina I would have a blind spot.
I am just worried that what caused it may happen again and this time effect my vision

I'm not sure of all the other things that can cause a scar, but a vein occlusion can. If a blood vessel gets blocked, a small area of cells will die. In an otherwise healthy person, (i.e. no blood pressure/artery/heart/diabetic problems) the cause of an occlusion is unknown and probably random. Unlikely to occur again.
A retinal tear might cause a scar (anybody with tears know for sure?). A head or eye injury, or serious myopia can cause a tear (as in RIP, not CRY).

Hope the eye doc can put your mind at rest.

I just wanted to give an update on my eye problem in case anyone ever has the same and is worried.
I saw the eye specialist today and he said I have what is called Congenital Hypertrophy of the Retinal Pigment Epithelium, which is basically a benign lesion that I don't need to worry about, but just get checked once a year.
So now I can stop freaking out!!
