hi, im weight lifting to get strong for rugby, not to gain muscle mass. does the rule of protien intake (1g per body lbs) still apply just to gain strength and not muscle mass?

yes. you need to maintain the muscle you have as well as build some more (though not necessarily a lot) in order to improve strength.
