 When my son was 5, he used to play hockey with his dad on the road. He complained that his hips hurt. Now that he is almost 9 and active in the sport" ice hockey",,,he has a hard time getting up, because his knees hurt, and he complains of a sore back. I did take him to a specialist, who basically said he was your average( then 7) yr old, but is awkward and would never be " that " hockey star.Hmmm, with the recent complaints my son has, I am sure something has been missed. He even asked me today...when I was going to get an appointment to have his knees checked out.
He does do pretty good with his team and has alot of fun, but I notice when he skates, he does drag his one leg a little to the point of his one the skate skimming the ice ( toe portion) ,and he seems a little off balance sometime, Almost like he doesnt have much strength in the one leg/side.
Can anyone identify with any of this??? Im thinking possibly anything from childs arthritus to....?

Definately worth looking into further.
Children should NOT hurt - no matter what sport they are playing.
A consult to a pediatric rhuematologist would be your best bet.
My son has possible JRA (a good rheumy won't give you the diagnosis so that he can get his own insurance at 25 years old). He's turning nine this week, but started limping at 2.5 years old. He's had a relatively good and normal life including sports. It's just sometimes he hurts or limps and won't complain. But his rheumy will tell you - children should NOT hurt frequently - yes sometimes there are growing pains - but a child should NOT hurt in the same joint often.
Let me know if I can answer any more questions.

Thank-you fo the response, my boy doesnt complain about much either...but when he does, you know its a problem. I will ask my doc for a referral to try and find out if there is a problem. My (ex) husband doesnt feel its important...He thinks its just growing pains or kid stuff...but I do not ever remember any of my other kids having any of these problems....and they were all active too.

Hi at the age of 8 i started playing basketball for a youth team. By the time i was 10 i would have to use knee straps all the time as my knees would constantly ache! I saw several specialists and it was basically put down to playing to much sport at an early age (body not developed enough).
with the use of pain killers and knee straps i carried on playing the sport until 19 yrs old when after a major knee dislocation i gave up the sport!
up until the age of 32 i used pain killers everyday along with large neoprene knee supports, but i moved house and my new doctor done a medical on me when i joined his practice and wasn't happy i used so many pain killers, he refferred me to a muscular skeletal specialist and within 5 mins of seeing this specialist i was told i had flat feet! he explained what was wrong and sent me to a implant specilaist who has fitted implants into all the soles of my shoes!
i now dont use pain killers and dont wear supports and can walk quite happily for tyhe first time without pain!
hope this helps!

I will second the above poster. My 13 yo stepson complained of pain in his back/hips/knees/feet ALL THE TIME since I had known him at 10. I noticed that he walked kinda funny (plopping his feet instead of rolling heel to toe) so I took him to a doctor (podiatrist). Flat feet, as flat as they can get. He was starting to get bone spurs. He got inserts for his shoes and is playing sports and lost 50 pounds. IT is amazing how the feet can affect how your whole body feels.

Hi and thank-you so much for posting...it's been awhile since i have been here...but I just found out that his knee xrays shows " bone bruises". Apparenty a serious injury has occurred at some point(?) Not sure of all the details or implications here, have a thorough meeting again with doc on Friday and my son will be referred to an orthopediac surgeon. While I am there, I will insist on back and ankle and hip xrays!!! My poor babe..strong and rarely complains and it would just devestate him if he could no longer play hockey.
(sigh) I sure hope that this is all that it is.

Hi - glad you finally got an answer to your son's pain. If you need further advice on doctor's, xray, ct, mri reports - there is a separate board for bone disorders. You might find someone else who's been through the same thing that could offer advice.
Wishing you the best!

Well, gotta say that the trip to the Docs today was all but satisfying. She knew nothing about "Bone Bruises" . I did ask to read the xray techs report, and although I cant remember all the words, " tensor clip wounds" and osteodiodral (spel?)defects did stand out. Because my 9 yr old hurts in a few other areas, I insisted on xrays for those areas as well, and then we will discuss " what and who" she will refer us to. An orthopedic surgeon or a Pediatrician.
I asked her many questions that she couldnt answer. One of which was...is this a serious condition...she said...well, probably not, it's probably not cancer. OMG.....I need a referral desperately....

Oh I am so sorry for your last doctor visit. Yes, what a horrible thing to say - scaring a mom to death to even mention the word!!! But I can say that I've been there and lived through it too except my little son was only 2 at the time.
Go ahead and get the referral now!!! Usually ortho offices have xray machines in their offices and can get the xrays and review them with you that day (no more waiting)!
Call your doc today and tell her you're very anxious and you want a referral to an orthopedic specialist/surgeon ASAP! Also, you can request a copy of the xray report and then you will KNOW what was reported and do a little of your own research before the new appt.
Know that I'm here for you and my heart goes out to you!!! Please let me know how things go or if you just want to talk.

Thank-you,Melinda for your thoughtful words.
After receiving the good results from the remainder of my boys x-rays,my Doc is referring us to a specialist. With the waiting lists, I am told it will take quite some time. I am so surprised that I couldnt get any info from my doc. I did research on line, and found out alot. Its pretty uncommon in 9 yr olds tho.
My faith in Dr's are not great to begin with, and this just amplifys things. I will keep you and all interested up-to-date. Im sorry for what you have gone thru as well, and hope all is going good for you now. And you are so right to say that having a child is like having your heart walk around outside your body...beautifully phrased. :) The support here is incredible and I thank you Melinda, and everyone else.
Hugs,
Peach

Update,
We are now awaiting a catscan appointment on my boys knees. He has had to stop all sports....He's pretty upset about it. Hopefully it will help ease the pain tho until they determine just " whats" going on. More xrays for today on his spine too.
